The last coin (1869-P $10 Gold) I've been looking for to complete the 1869 Mint Set w/Gold (Registry

Ironically, I was just speaking last week about the fact that I've given up hope to find this coin. One pops up every so often but I'm not so plugged in so odds of me finding one are slim/none, and I've been looking for a long time (I p*****ed on the NGC coin in 2014 because I couldn't see it in hand).

Anyhow, a friendly PM from Boosibri telling me Doug W just listed one on his site, and I literally began shaking. I am 99% sure I sent Doug an e-mail that I'll take it before going to the website to see grade/cost image

Anyhow, this has been my hunt for a while... an 1869-P $10. PCGS Pop of 37 coins, 12 at XF45 and 12 higher, with only 2 of those examples grading MS (one is a 60, other a 62), and not a single AU58.

Wow, can't believe I filled the lost hole in the US set (thanks to all for looking out for this coin for me).

I have a thread over on the Registry Set forum with all the pics. It's probably worth a look image

I ventured over to the Registry Forum and it was well worth the look.
You went above and beyond there. The fractional gold is very cool

That is an amazing collection you've built image

    Congrats!

I have 2 of the 6/0 MS66RD 1869 IHC's. It was a great year for coins. One of them is the S-3 varieties.

    Coingrats. That's quite an accomplishment.

I've been enjoying your Darkside additions to the "1869 Everything" set.

Did you end up using the Japanese 2-bu you got from me, or the other one you had? I guess I should go look at the set again.

Edit- aha. Cert number matches my old one. Cool. I'm glad to have been a cointributor, in some way.

That is really a nice coin and very scarce to.

Thank you all for your kind words, what a project! Many of you helped me hunt down coins, and as BloodMan accurately pointed out this coin's mintage of 1,830 and a total of 50-75 pieces known to exist is an example of how hard some of these 1869 coins were to find (the 1869-P $5 was my biggest find last year).

FTB, I actually started creating a template for a poster a little while ago but stopped, I will take that back up again and create a wallpaper for my computer for sure image

Now on to Cal Fracs, like 8 more to go and some of them are very very very scarce, 25-50 pieces maybe. I was fortunate to be able to acquire about 40% of all the 1869's that were made, and will continue to look for the remaining ones.

And the World coins of 1869 are turning out to be a lot of fun, and as you get into Asia, Middle East, and and India and South America, the whole "what grade is it" becomes a lot less relevant...the fact that an 1869 piece can be acquired from a country at all is a blessing. I even found a nice AH1286 (our year 1869) piece from Afghanistan that's in route to me from Hungry (taking forever to get here, but that's a common issue when buying from overseas). I have about 5 World coins in grading right now, and given that there were about 120-130 countries in 1869 (although many were territories controlled by other countries and didn't have their own currencies, per se), getting even 1 coin from each country should prove to be...let's say "interesting" image

    Thanks again.

What's interesting is that no $10 1869 has yet to CAC. Congratulations!

<< <i>What's interesting is that no $10 1869 has yet to CAC. Congratulations! >>

I'm going to give mine a try (sending in today), but I can kind of understand why. Here's my theory (similar for the $5)...

    - Super low mintage
    - Less than 100 pieces out there all in all, for sure
    - All have PL surfaces
    - All extremely baggy
    - When you (CAC) look at scores of $10's from other years that look so nice/original, then you get an 1869, well, there isn't a single 1869 piece out there that looks remotely close to anything that's common. If you looked at the MS60 1869, it looks like it got into a BB gun fight with someone image

I have a really nice $5 and a really nice $10, very original coins, but because they are PL and circulated they don't have that "crusty" look that you would see on a circulated gold coin of higher mintage. The PL circulated coins develop black shiny look around devices, not the nice even wear that you'd see on a non-PL coin.

It's really hard to describe unless you saw some 1869 $5's and $10's from Philly. VERY different than their San Fran counterparts.

So CAC, I believe, is simply not taking into account the scarcity of the coin they are reviewing, and what the entire population looks like when reviewing the coin. I doubt anyone at CAC has seen in hand more than 25 pieces (no offense/knock, there are just not that many out there) in the last decade, while they probably look at 250 saints on any given day.

I don't know...I think the piece I have is nice and should sticker, it's not cleaned by any means and while it's baggy, it's a legit 45 with nice luster/frost, but all the 1869 $10's are beat up. Frankly, this one is one of the better ones if you look at other online images.

I will send it in today, will post back here in about a 10-14 days with results. I don't believe it will sticker given your observation, but it's worth a look...

Well done and congrats on completing the US portion of your set.
  • I should have mentioned that while no $10 1869 business strike Eagle has yet to CAC, there are three proof 1869s that have. One is for sale at the Legend auction and should bring six figures. So my question is do you think the same dies were used for the business strikes as only 1,830 were minted, and they all seem to have some proof like attributes. I can't see them making a separate pair of dies for such a low mintage.
