The counterstamp I own ... because it is a political token now.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
An 1824 Washington-LaFayette medalette counterstamped on a filed-down Matron Head large cent. Rare--only ca. 12 are known. They were allegedly thrown from carriages in General LaFayette's procession to the crowds that lined the streets of the towns through which the general passed. Examples are also known on an 1824 dime, two half dollars, an 1807 half cent, a one real, and a two reales piece. Small medals of this same design are also known in gold, silver, and white metal.

Here's one of Dave Bowers 1961-62 circa HK-854A White Metal Continental Dollar SC$1 re-strikes counter stamped with his Empire Coin Company store card during his early days with partner Jim Ruddy. The store card obverse motif is copied from the 1787 IMMUNIS COLUMBIA copper and the reverse from a $5 gold coin of 1795 these being the Empire Coin Company trademark. The obverse states Empire Coin Company Inc. and the reverse Professional Numismatists.

"A.G." counterstamped within a wide-toothed rectangular depression on a U.S. 1807 Large Cent, HT-A458, R9, Unique, Ex-Dr. Sol Taylor collection, Brunk plate coin. Brunk states this isn't a mark of a silversmith, pewterer, or gunsmith. The stamp remains unattributed but is assigned to the Hard Times era by Brunk.

Question on counter-stamps: is there a way to tell that a counter-stamp is original? Original meaning, it is "old" and not freshly stamped? I'd think that if there is patina/toning on a coin that is counterstamped, it would stay on the coin, making it difficult to determine how long ago the counter-stamp was performed......any thoughts on this?

PS- I love that Walker with the Fisher coach on it. That's sexy for a 20th century counterstamp!

1835 Capped Bust Quarter "Houck's Panacea Baltimore" Maryland, Counterstamp, HT-140, Rarity-7.
This is a newly discovered date as up until now none have been known dated beyond 1819 on a capped bust quarter.
