1891 CC Morgan - How would you grade it?

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 8,667 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought this raw today as an XF coin. It does have interesting PL fields. Do you think there is enough detail to warrant AU?
Does it look original to you guys?... not cleaned? What would you grade it?

It's AU all day but I'm not sure it would grade. I say 50/50 chance w/out seeing it in person.

Most definitely AU. It's also definitely been cleaned but the vast majority of slabbed AU Morgans have been cleaned so you may get lucky and have it straight-grade. I'd put the odds at <10% though.

That one is right on the border between EF and AU. If forced to guess, I think it would grade as AU-50.

Looking at the reverse, I say AU50 all day. The obverse is borderline to me - on Monday, Wednesday and Friday I'd give it an XF45; on Tuesday and Thursday, AU50. It's tough with proof-like fields as the chatter shows up more prominently.

it's pretty scruffy. I think it's only worth XF money.

I could see this coin in an AU-50 holder. Close-up digital pictures tend to make marks look worse than they are.

AU50, but can't tell how bad the scratches are on the obverse from the photos.
    When in doubt, don't.

It looks like it would be au53 to me, but I'm not sure that it would holder because of the scratch.

45 is my WAG....can you imagine what that coin looked like when made??

Still with PL surfaces that far down is amazing.

I doubt PCGS would be very kind to that coin. It has several issues that would likely add up to Genuine. Which issue they chose to accompany the holder is up in the air. It still has some luster and no doubt AU, but the cheek scratch and field smoothing, along with the cleaning or whizzing just adds up.

I think that the numismatic marketplace would "Net Grade" the OP's 1891-CC Morgan XF (Details) due to the scratches in front of Miss Liberty's face, on her cheek and the numerous contact marks in the unprotected fields.

I'm not sure if the top tier TPGS's would formally numerically grade it, or label it as "Genuine" or assign a "Details" net grade.

I would just leave it raw in a Morgan album set.

Thanks all for the replies... I didn't mean to "post and run" but got really busy today and this was the first chance I had to check in.
I appreciate all the insight. I wish I could invite you all over to check this one out in person. It really must have been a stunning coin shortly after being struck to have such nice mirrors still.
I wish I could minimize the cheek scratch, but it's there. I'm still not convinced it's been cleaned. I feel like I know Morgans pretty well and this one is difficult to pin down.

    It sure has some character.
