Stop reading all the internet garbage about failing dollar etc by self proclaimed so called experts. Just like the wind, they come and fade away over time. If you are a believer in a SHTF scenario, PM's would be useless. Best to stock up on food and ammo, built yourself a bomb shelter in an isolated part of the world (Antarctic would come to mind

And after those (plus water, food, fuel, medicine, daily hygiene products) some means of portable wealth you could carry to pay for things (gold, silver, jewelry, diamonds, etc.). You can't barter everything. Some means of portable "money" would have to come to the forefront. The fast car is only as good as the amount of fuel you could find + a good mechanic. The shotgun as good as the ammo you could find. The dog as good as the amount of dog food/scraps you could afford to feed it. As soon as you run out of ammo the next guy will own your car, dog, and shotgun....lol.
