<< <i>Thanks. The 78 Brett had me all fired up for those very stated reasons. Lack of PD plus the centering. His face and the top border are usually covered in black ink PD.

Just reeled in this baby seconds ago...

    That's a great looking 6!!

Some freakishly nice centering on those 50's cards, especially the 52s!

EBay been berry berry good to me. Could not hit BIN button fast enough. I am all about any centered 86 Steve Young I can find; I really enjoy the thrill of finding a centered Young.

Tons of great stuff on this thread! Can't give proper shout outs to everyone, so sorry for those I miss:

Doug--incredible Mantles. Two of my favorite designs and super eye appeal.

Todd--That is a beautifully centered Mays. Would love to own one just like that someday!

Eric--Nice to see someone else sharing some modern basketball love, and particularly Anthony Davis! Love that you are collecting him and Andrew Luck in BGS and I am collecting them in PSA. Means we don't have to fight over cardsimage I will share my latest pickups on here as soon as they get here from PWCC! I've got one card you will like.

Now those are exactly my kind of pickups! To think you can get all those for less, perhaps even far less, than the price of any one of them in high grade! And they must look like near mint cards from a foot away in a wall case, with that centering. You don't see many 52T Mays or 69 Ryans with that centering-- edit to add the Murray and 53 Mick too!

Yes sir, all for the price of the Donnie in a PSA 10 and the Murray in a PSA 9. I love low graded "junk"!

That AS Mick up there has awesome focus-- so many are blurry.

Great Mathews. If I owned that one I could never pay for another in higher grade, so nice-looking is that 7.

Love that 78 tray, Jeremy! The pre-79 trays are VERY tough to find, and the price sticker adds an element of authenticity, too. Just think, that tray sat on a variety store shelf back in 1978 waiting for some kid to convince his mom to go for "the triple pack" only to be turned down, leaving the tray to sit intact in storage for the next 37 years!

Doug, that is definitely a sweet 53 Mick that Greg won. In fact, he outbid me on it! I've seen it in his case from a foot away and it looks exactly like my 5. Insane value.

Just found a centered 1974 Aaron #1 hiding on eBay; gotta love the big smile on Hank's face in this card:

    << <i>DM23HOF,
I noticed you post scans of slabbed cards without showing the slab, do you crack them out? >>

    Hi,

I crop out the slab/flip. The primary reason for this is that I prefer to just look at the card, to have the card be the focus. Cropping out flips also has the fun side-effect of exposing the subjectivity of the third-party grading game, and its arbitrarily codified technical rules. I like the key relationship to be between eyes and the card, to let that pure relationship decide what is being seen, as opposed to yielding or forfeiting that decision-making power to some sticker, which is just someone else's opinion, as valid as our own. The slabs are awesome for both protection and in that they signify trained eyes have looked for potential alterations (critical for pieces being bought from a cyber-distance), which are tremendous positives-- though I do prefer raw acquisitions when possible. Also, I just don't find the stickers aesthetically pleasing, as compared to just the pure card (I keep my cards in a bank box and see them more on my gallery than in person).

The idea to do this came one day when I was holding one of those velvet purple PSA cases for slabbed cards. I noticed there was a clear plastic window that allowed one to see and read the sticker, yet the card was entirely covered up. That was a real epiphany. It struck me as nuts. I felt like Howard Beale in NETWORK. To think, whoever designed that case felt it was more important to show the sticker than the card, when the plastic pane should reveal the card.

You've convinced me. It also has the added benefit of making the scan of the card bigger for display on the registry, etc. Now is this a patented move or are you encouraging others to adopt it as well? I'm thinking of going back and re-cropping mine.

Haha not patented at all, my friend. By all means please join me! Once you get those flips out of sight and mind you'd be amazed at all the awesome cards that you'll start reeling in for your collection.

I hope I'll be forgiven one last post that is not exactly on-thread. To make up for it I will show when it arrives the evidence of my failure to keep my vow, made earlier in this thread, to wait until May to buy anything else. I've shown this card before, but it seems an appropriate one for my first sans-flip post, so I took a new, better scan and cropped it to display the card. I like how it turned out, and it shows the beauty of this card much better than my previous attempt. I'm on board.

That is one hell of a 56 Doug. Congrats!

That Harry Davis card looks under-graded to me. Awesome eye-appeal. Congrats.

That 56 Mantle looks great as well and would love to add one that looks like that to my collection. That Bowman Mantle looks great as well.

While my player collections are my #1 collecting joy, I have other projects I'm working on too. One of them is my 74 Topps Red Sox registry. Very happy to add this PSA 9 HOFer with some of my birthday cash.

    image

I added a wrinkle to collecting the graded team set, and I'm trying to work in a decent number of autos. The linked set has a red flip Bernie Carbo. I have a signed Luis Tiant at PSA right now as part of the red flip group sub. And I just got a Tommy Harper signed which will make its way to PSA too.

Man that Yount is sweet. Centering, edges, focus, deep color, sharp corners, awesome card. The T206 and the Mays also look well beyond their assigned grades. Busy month for collectors!

    That Yount is bodacious!

Love seeing all the cards in this thread. Always neat seeing what everyone is collecting. Now for a little basketball. A couple new additions straight from the recent PWCC auctions. The Boozer is one of the more condition sensitive cards in the set and I was very happy to get a good price on this card (a relative rarity it seems with PWCC). I wasn't looking to add any more Anthony Davis autographs as they have appreciated too fast for my liking, but I couldn't pass on a very nice looking already graded gem I didn't have. Again, I think I got a good deal on the card and since I had some extra in my PayPal account, why not? One more Unibrow!

Another white whale. I am really pleased with this one. PSA says it's a 7. What the issues are keeping it out of an 8 I don't know and don't really care, as it's got great eye appeal.
