April 2015~Feel Free to Post Your Pickups!!

Mark must be diligently studying all 30 MLB rosters for free agent diamonds in the rough in a valiant effort to avoid finishing 50 games below .500 in our CU fantasy baseball league, so I thought I'd start a new thread for April pickups...the March thread was a great one, so let's see what new additions we have for April as we move into the baseball season..

Super clean 1978 OPC wax box with original piece of scotch tape from the factory still intact..

In addition to baseball cards, I also collect vintage bottles~here is a late 19th century malt extract bottle from Johann Hoff, which was marketed as a nutritive tonic with the ad slogan, "Johann Hoff's Malt Extract Makes Flesh & Blood."

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Sweet 78 OPC box! I ripped one less than 6 or 7 years ago that I purchased from BBCE. I think I paid about 200 for the box. If only I could do that again. I still have about 10 cards I need to complete the set.

    Cool bottle too!

Tim, you are not messing around!! The opc box is sweet. The bottle is cool too. Thanks for sharing.

Tim that is a very nice start to the April pickups thread. Way to get the month started with a little OPC.

Picked these up from fellow board member Curt (bbcemporium). Thanks again Curt.

I am always looking for low graded Mantles that are well centered and present well for their grade.

Thanks Dan. Still have some more that I need. Currently looking for '58 and '60. Also need some earlier ones, but those will have to wait unless I find them at great prices.

    Doug,

Those don't look like 1964 Standups!

I just got back from the local monthly show. There's usually not much in the way of graded cards at that show, but I was lucky today and able to pick up this one for my HOF Rookies set.

    image

ETA: Cropping out the holder and enlarging the card shows why this got a 6--very slight corner bend on lower left corner next to Fritz.

That 56 Mick is awesome. Would love to have that specific example.

Heavy duty Mays RC. Now you need a centered 52 Mays, and then the highly elusive 53 Topps Mays to keep that RC company!

Stopped by the (very sad) local monthly card show.

$25 outlay - I'm keeping the Ranaudo and Chamberlain - the rest I bought for resale. Remember when the Chamberlain was a $100+ card?

Thanks Tim for getting the April thread going. I was on spring break with the family in TN and just got back yesterday. Nice pick up on the 78 OPC box.

Doug - better watch you back with Eric on those Mantles. Those are right up his strike zone. Very nice cards.

Got a little package from Mike while I was out. Will post later today.

I bought this Rose/Munson 79 cello a long time ago and sold to Mike (CpaMike) raw. He graded a couple years ago and now it resides exactly where it belongs. Mike doesn't know it yet but his 70 wax with Bench on back will be with me soon as well as Tim's 73 Bench rack......LOL.

I'm a sucker for anything with the American flag on it and always liked 1992 All World. I'm working on a raw master set by breaking boxes... hoping to stumble on a Jimmy Brown or Joe Namath autograph in the process. The Legends & Rookies gold star inserts are truly a thing of beauty. All World, comparatively speaking, was fairly limited in production... it's too bad 1992 had no rookies to speak of.

Grote, that's a cool bottle! My dad collects cone top beer cans but picks up bottles from time to time. He has a good amount of pre-prohibition bottles. Nice piece.
  • graygatorgraygator Posts: 453 ✭✭✭✭
I won this after getting somewhat overzealous because of some ebay bucks. Then I made an impromptu side trip to House of Cards while in DC this week, where I picked up some ungraded lower condition 1956s. And now I'm tapped out for the month already. May can't come soon enough.

Wow, the signed Doak and Otto cards are incredible! I'd love to own a vintage Otto card one day. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for sharing those. I'd love to see more autos from that set.

I still want Dbone's insane 56 Mick, but wound up stumbling across another one with freak centering, so grabbed it. Ditto on the 54B, which blew me away, as it's just a 3.

  • Holy Cow. What a month, DM23! Only the truest collector would grab a Goudey Ruth and a 1988 Sticker-card in the same binge. Your eye for centering is known but I am still impressed by the Mays, 1954 Mickey, the Homerun leaders card from 1962, and that Teddy. Those cards are usually wrecked on the centering department.

PS: Just spent a good time surfing your Collector Focus gallery; hands-down one of, if not the best, collection I have seen. The time you must have spent in choosing each card is real hobby devotion.

Added these five to my Seaver collection. I don't have many OPC ... just started adding them recently. The color of the reverse on the '68 OPCs is real strange.

I can't believe how much great stuff you guys have picked up!

Just wanted to comment a bit - will make some more later.

Mike - the "Early" card is sweet.

    Doug - can't believe that Seaver 68OPC is only a 3.5! A beauty.

Paul - what a great Clemente!

Mark - a bit of deja view - nice Rose cello.

Great looking cards all around. That '78 Brett is is always either off center, full of PD, or both--to find one that is both centered and PD free must've taken a while. And I have a soft spot for that '88 Fleer Jeffries. Only card I know of that was ever stolen from me. Got a factory set for my 12th Birthday, put it in a binder, and put the binder on a shelf. Was looking through it a couple of years later and the Jeffries was gone. No telling which of my lousy friends swiped it, but by that time the hype had died down so I didn't really care enough to try to get another one. Finally got around to replacing it about 6 months ago and the local shop just gave it to me when I asked if they had one.
  • DM23HOFDM23HOF Posts: 2,118 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks. The 78 Brett had me all fired up for those very stated reasons. Lack of PD plus the centering. His face and the top border are usually covered in black ink PD.

Just reeled in this baby seconds ago...

  • Hey fellas!

i'd still pick up some mantles, but they are few and far between for what i require, and when they do show up, they go pretty high (Thanks Matt & Doug! LOL)

Back in January i decided to start collecting NBA RCs again for the first time since the 1991/92 releases. For this focus, I've got two rules.

1989-present: BGS 9.5 True Gem (meaning no 9 sub grades)
prior to 1989: PSA, grade unimportant, all about how the card looks, not the number on the flip

Anywho, sorry to bore you with all that image

    won this tonight:
