Chopmarked Trade Dollar...Check this out

jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got this Chopmarked trade off the BST....I'm sure you chopmark guys have seen this before, but it's a new one on me.

It looks like something was placed underneath three of the chops that transfered some sort of impression onto the reverse of the chop.
It's very clearly a pattern of some sort, not the usual rough impression from the stone...

Any thoughts ?

I see what you are talking about and have not noticed that before on chopped T$'s Looks like the coin was sitting on something that had a design on it that transfered to the coin when the chopmarks were delivered to the other side. Almost looks like Chinese characters of some sort.

Interesting.... the ovoid chops are quite clear and attractive...the reverse chop seems to have damaged the six in the date...I do see the 'pattern' you are referring to.... no idea what that could be..Cheers, RickO

Jaypem I like the oval chopmarks. The other chops also look different styled, I wonder if they originate from a different region than most others?

As for the reciprocal damage, I too have seen it before. I think it's from the texture of the underlying surface, it can look strange even like another chopmark sometimes.

Really neat coin with cool chops!

I have seen the effect you are describing before. I had always assumed it came from whatever the opposite side of the coin was in contact with when the chop was applied.

NIce coin, I like those oval chops. From what I have read, coins were usually chopped while on a stone or wood block. This suggests that some were marked while resting on an iron substrate with lettering. Another mysterious aspect to chopped trade dollars, which likely will never be solved since almost all available iron was melted and recast during Mao's "great leap forward."

    Thanks for the excellent replies.
I'm glad to here I'm not the only one seeing unusual things on chopmarked coins !

The design that imprinted into the wheat shafts is particularly cool to look at.
Also, I just realized that what ever was used underneath the chops must have been engraved incuse for the design to stamp up the way it has...interesting.

One more thing, I'm wondering if this one has the repunched 6 in the date? I think I see something inside the upper part of the 6 but since there was a chop opposite the date I can't tell if it's just damage. Maybe you can tell something with a loupe. Anyway, a very cool TD!

I'd say that 6 in the date was re-punched image

Question Kaz, if it has the rpd is that at all something you consider special ? >>

I think it is an interesting variety, along the lines of the 77-S with the repunched 7, (although more subtle) and would like to someday have an example in my set.

I agree with you Kaz, and we know that some of them circulated in China as DDR has a chopmarked example of this variety in his set.

I didn't know that; thanks Dan.

So is this one an RPD... I could take a closer shot of the date area, if that'd help image
  • kazkaz Posts: 9,214 ✭✭✭✭✭
    That would be great!
  • jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭
Alright, close up of the date added...not seeing any RPD....

The chopmarked RPD is really common. It's tougher to find it unchopped.

Not sure I would say really common, rather relatively common.

I was not aware of thus, so how tough you speaking ? >>

I get the impression you're on eBay at least as much as the rest of us, so maybe we should be asking you that question.

Me thinks that the act of counterstamping a TD was not done with any particular care of kidgloves. Examine, weigh, stamp, have a nice day, next customer. Peace Roy
