Chopmarked Trade Dollar...Check this out
Just got this Chopmarked trade off the BST....I'm sure you chopmark guys have seen this before, but it's a new one on me.
It looks like something was placed underneath three of the chops that transfered some sort of impression onto the reverse of the chop.
It's very clearly a pattern of some sort, not the usual rough impression from the stone...
Any thoughts ?

<< <i>the two on the front mean car. the one close up from the back is the #9 cant see the other back two clearly >>
Huh. A 2-seater.
Lance.
As for the reciprocal damage, I too have seen it before. I think it's from the texture of the underlying surface, it can look strange even like another chopmark sometimes.
I have seen the effect you are describing before. I had always assumed it came from whatever the opposite side of the coin was in contact with when the chop was applied.

I'm glad to here I'm not the only one seeing unusual things on chopmarked coins !
The design that imprinted into the wheat shafts is particularly cool to look at.
Also, I just realized that what ever was used underneath the chops must have been engraved incuse for the design to stamp up the way it has...interesting.

<< <i>One more thing, I'm wondering if this one has the repunched 6 in the date? I think I see something inside the upper part of the 6 but since there was a chop opposite the date I can't tell if it's just damage. Maybe you can tell something with a loupe. Anyway, a very cool TD! >>
Question Kaz, if it has the rpd is that at all something you consider special ? >>
I think it is an interesting variety, along the lines of the 77-S with the repunched 7, (although more subtle) and would like to someday have an example in my set.

I agree with you Kaz, and we know that some of them circulated in China as DDR has a chopmarked example of this variety in his set.

The chopmarked RPD is really common. It's tougher to find it unchopped.

Not sure I would say really common, rather relatively common.
<< <i>Alright, close up of the date added...not seeing any RPD.... >>
Neither do I. Thanks for the closeups.

I was not aware of thus, so how tough you speaking ? >>
I get the impression you're on eBay at least as much as the rest of us, so maybe we should be asking you that question.
I can't remember who I sold this coin to but I'd love to buy it back if someone here still has it..
🤔
I never cared about this type of coin.
Well, we have eliminated one potential purchaser.

Me thinks that the act of counterstamping a TD was not done with any particular care of kidgloves. Examine, weigh, stamp, have a nice day, next customer. Peace Roy
