Yes, the date is totally out of style. That jumped out at me.

I guess the Chinese are even making these things now.

    I saw an 1805 $1 that used the same logotype. . . . image

I have just performed a specific levity test: I chuckled. No need to perform a specific gravity test (gravitas, maybe).

On a genuine coin, the 7 has a similar flair to it as the 1 does in the date (a little tail to it), not a flat mushy look. Either the coin is fake or the date was altered, but then why alter it to a 1897 when an 1894 would command a higher price.

Amazing. Perhaps they think that counterfeiting lower value coins will be more profitable? Terrible fake, by the way.

Ahh, the "fat 7" variety. I should really get to putting up its profile on The Black Cabinet. If it weren't for the bad digit, it's actually a pretty good fake, in-hand.

Edit: Messaged the seller. Informed them of applicable laws.

Got a snippy email from him. The coin was verified by a coin dealer, so I should mind my own business!

They at least graced you with a reply. :-)

However I think we got through to him: This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing. :-)
