From my old California days, I believe that's the one and only "Cal Worthington"
I bought a 1968 Dodger Charger from him. It was a TV car!

  • The guy has been hyper-critical of me on MANY occasions, but he doesn't deserve to be banned. That's ridiculous. He's highly opinionated... so what. Only weak people are bothered by words on a message board. Hopefully it's not permanent...

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents here...

I don't know the poster in question and have no dog in the fight either way but I'm just wondering how many posters need to get the boot before they realize the forum rules aren't just a suggestion. I'm amazed at the patience some of the mods have because rules #3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 get broken on this site in some form almost daily to varying degrees. The boards have rules for a reason...and just because someone's your buddy, or mine, or someone else's, that doesn't exempt them.

Let's get real. Our hosts here aren't all that strict-certainly not as much as is the case with other boards I've been on in the past-yet inexplicably some folks still think they have some entitlement to pretty much say and do what they want without consequences...and if they do get the boot, they figure if enough of their friends whine to the mods about it they'll get reinstated. Not cool IMO. I saw the thread in question and there's a difference between debating someone's statements, assertions and points and attacking them on a personal level. As always JMHO

I wish there was a rule on here that said no trolling... some people have a true knack of baiting people into doing harm to themselves.

+1. The attacks are not cool. I have been on the receiving end of numerous attacks. Thank goodness I have pretty thick skin. Maybe the time out will help him get some kind of disorder in order. There is a difference between debating and attacking. Unfortunately, some users can't separate the two.

  • Actually, personal attacks that are derived from actions related to the disagreement can be an important and useful part of debate. I would know.

Usually when someone has to resort to attacks and name calling, it means they have lost the debate and don't know how else to respond.
  • Or, because it makes their point more persuasive. And funny.

Remember that exchange between Archie Bunker and Maude?

"Franklin Delano Roosevelt RUINED this country!"

    "You're FAT!"
  • Bobbyw8469, you have done a wonderful job making much of this thread about yourself. That would be contrary to your self-proclaimed thick skin.

Didn't you get a temporary ban for doing many of the same things you are whining about?

I enjoy reading the posts of knowledgeable members regardless of their style, like CDsNuts.

I have been mostly a lurker for a couple of years but it is not as informative as it once was due to bannings like this.

There is a difference between debating and attacking. Unfortunately, some users can't separate the two.

Some users will also never understand or acknowledge that they can be wrong about something, and will treat any different opinion or helpful advice as a personal attack.

On page 4 of this thread you posted about what you interpreted to be an attack against you by somebody you classified as a known hater and even created a quote to make it sound uglier.

When I recently called out a fake Mickey Mantle card scam going on, I was called out by a well known "hater" of me. "This card is obviously real - You have no idea what you are talking about". He wasn't as ugly about it as some members, but the card was an obvious fake. You had to have blinders on to not realize it was one of the many reprints that are on Etsy.

This is the thread you are referring to -
    http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=938122

I don't see any attack, ugliness, or hate in my replies. I see somebody mistakenly accusing a seller of selling a fake card based on incorrect interpretation of what you think you saw based on poor quality pictures. I had a different opinion based on a more thorough examination of all the pictures and a better understanding of why the pictures looked the way they did. It was a short sweet uneventful thread, which now two weeks you bring us as an example of how you're attacked on the boards. Like you said above, There is a difference between debating and attacking. Unfortunately, some users can't separate the two.
  • Now THAT is funny! Talk about a persecution complex...

A bit desperate with your accussations? Unfortunately for you I am not an alt.

You are no better than those who have been banned but because you are still here, you want to act like you are.

<< <i>There is a difference between having a debate with someone, and then bringing up personal attacks and name calling. No offense, but a lot of people in here have a hard time separating the two. I think that is what the mods are trying to curb. A debate is one thing. The name calling went out in grade school. There is another board, which I will leave nameless, where you can cuss, and act like Beavis and Butthead to your hearts content. I'm thankful it's not here. >>

People need to be able to separate the two. Lee jumped on me for one of my posts and it was clearly his opinion that he thought I was a novice, not knowing I've been deep in the hobby for over 30 years. People need to fight fire with fire and stick it back in one's eye and this will easily set the story straight. This is an open forum and we are all adults I think?, People in general have grown so thin skinned and cannot take criticism without viewing it as a personal attack. This is rubbish, just based on principle alone, Lee and anyone else should be able to voice their opinion without fear of retaliation from big brother or any other form of watching eyeball. This forum is a great avenue for information and education inside and outside the hobby. Name calling though I will admit is not criticism but more of an expression of frustration because these words cannot take you to the members front door and deal with the problem like we did in the 80's!

One quick observation and this is not directed at any "one" individual.

But, the OPs goal was to have the Mods reconsider Lee's banishment and any remarks outside and contrary to that premise - I fear - is neither going to resonate with them, nor convince them to the contrary (of that decision).
