I like 1 oz government minted coins (Maples primarily since I am in Canada), 10 oz bars and some 100 oz bars. I've never cared much for 1 oz bars. In their packaging they take up too much space, they are heavily counterfeited / easier to counterfeit than coins.

I prefer ASE's....they are recognized and very liquid....much more likely to be accepted in trade than bars. Cheers, RickO

Anyone have a link to that amazingly well written diatribe about the virtues of 90% over all other physical silver?

Au walkers and ase's...easy to get and very liquid. The only problem is letting go of them.

After buying/selling/trading about every type/quantity of silver there is short of 1000oz bars I've settled on ASEs for all my silver needs. image

Why? Nice size, government backed, accepted everywhere, and nearly always trading at a slight premium to melt - ASEs fill the bill for me. YMMV.

P.S. This is if physical silver is your choice. Paper silver is appealing to many people.

I buy and stack ASE mostly but have an accumulation of Franklin/Walker halves, J&M 1 oz Bars and sprinkle in a few Morgan/Peace.

Why? I like to stack, but will sell every ASE and J&M bar when the time is right and will unload almost all of my 90%, I love the older coins so regardless of a selloff I will keep a few Morgans, Franklin and Walkers.
  • ASE's, my first choice when adding to the stack.

*Everything that Weiss said in his 2009 World Treatise*, with some additional observations:

I don't know how much 90% silver has really been melted; I suppose that some percentage actually has been melted and still a lot remains. So the recognition factor will be around a long time. The more that gets melted, the more likely it will start to gain some premium over melt.

40 years ago, non-cull 90% silver dollars did have a premium, but the minor coins did not. Now, non-cull 90% half dollars generally carry some premium as well, especially Walking Liberty halves. Any way you slice it, 90% silver US coinage is a reasonable way to own some silver.

In the meantime, Silver Eagles have become the dominant and most well-known silver bullion out there. Weiss's comments concerning the recognition factor, the US Mint being the largest and one of the highest quality production facilities in the world for silver coinage, and the fact that you live in the USA - these are compelling reasons to stick with US silver coinage, both old and new.

The main reason to buy 1 oz. silver bars - is because, as you stated in the OP, you prefer them. Apparently there are lots of silver bar collectors and stackers, which helps with the liquidity of the market, which is important when you decide to sell.

If you must know, these are the reasons why.image

Silver ETFs for instant liquidity, lack of storage problems and expenses, and the low buy/sell spread.

And a small amount of physical for worst case scenarios.

Depends what I feel like buy and how much money I have at the time. Atm, I'm looking at 90% as I'm a little low on cash so that gives me an option to add a little to my pile here and there. But, I do like ASE's and Libertad's for rounds. As far as bars, I love the Geiger series.

My answer - all of it. Love me some 90% rolls, got all kinds of gov rounds 1/2-10oz, and some bars. Makes playing with the pirate chest more interesting.

I wouldn't overlook the 5 oz. silver America the Beautiful quarters.

Nice designs, relatively low mintages, and many are available at a modest premium above spot.
