I assume you shipped them this week. Can I also assume they went economy? If so, I'll add a couple more weeks to my request to show us the results by April 15th. Let's now shoot for "by May 1st". OK? Steve
does anyone with a shred of Numismatic credibility think that this has even a 1% chance of ending well? >>
Buffnixx - while I don’t claim to have a shred of numismatic credibility, I'm 99% certain you have a much better than 1%-chance this will turn out well. Ironically, I JUST received a submission back from PCGS - one of which was a carbon-spotted '36 Buffalo. I think this one is looks worse than yours:
My plan was to post-up some grades in a new thread, but when I saw this one I wanted to chime-in. I was quite concerned about several coins in this submission, and mostly for this ’36 buff... but let’s just say it did in-fact grade (PR) in the neighborhood you’re hoping for! Good luck!!
To Steve, Rest assured the results from PCGS will be included in this thread for all to see, whatever the results. You all have my word. buffnixx
((OK BUFFNIXX, Here we are on Wednesday, February 25th and during the past few weeks you have posted a number of threads here on the Coin Forum about these eight coins you will be sending off to PCGS for grading. Each has an interesting story and you have gotten a lot of attention here. So my question to you is very simple. Have you ACTUALLY sent the coins to PCGS yet for grading? If yes, have you received confirmation from PCGS that the coins have been received? We really wish you good luck in your attempts to get the coins graded BUT, to my mind, it should be more important to you and your own creditability to ACTUALLY respond to this Coin forum with the results from PCGS. I think a fair timeframe is by April 15th. Steve))

Thanks so much for posting your 1936 buffalo, looks almost like a twin brother to the coin I got herein displayed from Great Southern. WAS YOUR NICKEL DEEMED TO BE "SATIN" OR "BRILLIANT". And over the years I have seen more than a few 1936 proof buffs with carbon spots, wonder why this is so? Don't recall seeing unc 1936's with carbon spotting though.
Also can you post here what the verbiage actually was on the PCGS insert. Did it get like a PR60 grade with a qualifier of "carbon spots" or something else?
regards, buffnixx

The shipment of 8 coins is now at pcgs and I can actually see it thru this website. I will be checking it daily in a week or so and as soon as the grades are available to me all 8 will be posted, though this thread is only about 2 of them. Have never gotten truview pics but i did request them for the 1913 and 1936 nickels.
And as soon as the coins are back i will be posting photos of the actual coins. buffnixx

You will be doing a lot of reloading if you think an economy submission is going to be ready in a week or two. If express, that's about right.
got my truview pics this morning and then koyneqwest informed me that my grades had been posted. this piece got proof-64 satin finish and the 13 type one i had in another thread got matte proof-64. So it was a great experince to say the least. Thanks much for everyones' input. When I get back from vacation next week i will update this thread with the truview pic and then the photo of the slab when i get it back buffnixx

Another great score, glad you didn't listen to the "Experts" telling you what a mistake you made.

He should, but I'm sure he won't, because he's NEVER wrong.
Regardless of that particular poster and his spoutings -- well done, on believing in yourself, taking a chance and waiting for the results whether good or bad. You came out the clear winner here.
Congratulations BUFFNIXX. You were right on those two Buffalo nickels and deserve praise for your ability to pick them out as proofs. I also appreciate you agreeing to provide the results here. We look forward to seeing the results of all eight of the coins. Good Luck! Steve
Where is Crypto79? I'm curious to know what lessons he's learned from the Buffnixx experience. Grade the coin not the plastic? Never underestimate a collector with a true passion for a series? That it pays to take a chance once in a while?
<< <i>I was inclined to be negative but ignorance kept me unsure of the proof status But one is still a coin with spots. Otoh, it could still be a coup. I don't know. How big of a get is the spotted proof in it's current condition? >>
I think I can offer some fundamental help here. Check the price guides. Check recent sales on eBay, Heritage, etc. That piece is easily worth a thousand bucks, with no pushing to get it there.
Proofs nickels of this era are common with carbon spotting. My 1940 Reverse of 1938 steps Jefferson proof has this carbon flecking and also resides in a PR64 holder. But I have had success removing carbon spots from proofs and business strikes with a pointy toothpick, a steady hand and under magnification. And I've had no problems getting them graded. There was a time when I realized I wasn't going to find some of those early modern proofs without some spotting. I'd like to say how easy those carbon spots come off but might leave me libel, like micro pieces of dirt or scum, brittle like and what is sometimes left is a needle point of speck. I have a book that says most spots form on top of the patina or it's just an extension of the toning process where it builds up and looks black. But on several occasions, I have pushed/moved a carbon spot or two, so to speak, off a coin..........when I had a more steady hand. But first, try this on a coin of little value and only with a toothpick and not a needle. Made that mistake early on a couple coins although one did holder........twice.
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
As promised I am enclosing a picture of the slab. I was surprised it got 64 as I had expected 63. but i am not really complaining! And also the truview picture from pcgs. First time I have used the truview option and they are amazing! tom
I don't mind the taste of humble pie and hope this thread isn't the reason for someone being banned. If our opinions get us banned because we don't measure up to a standard, where is this standard ?
Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion and none should be banned because of their opinion unless they are rude and offensive and certainly no one in this thread was.

"PCGS PR63 Brilliant" No other verbiage - no mention of the carbon-spots.
EDIT: I should have mentioned - this coin looks better in the slab and appears to have some dark, reddish toning/color.
