Commoncents05's email account seems to have been hacked :(

Don't click on the link in the body of the mass email as it's probably a nasty virus.

    Doesn't mean the account is hacked - it could just be spoofed. There is nothing in the mail protocol that requires validation of the "senders" email address. If somebody is running what is called an open relay, they will accept mail from any computer and just use whatever you give them as the "sender". So it appears to come from CommonCents05...

    It's not good to be spoofed, but until we hear from CommonCents05, we won't know the situation...

    This is exactly what happened. It was not hacked. Any good spam filter should catch this. Thanks the Broadstruck for bringing this to my attention. It was an old email address that hasn't been used in years.

    they use spoofing to the people you know.

    they hack the account to harvest the email list to spoof the spam to.


    So, it was hacked first, then spoofed.

    the bad thing is that they do not need to spoof the same email address. They will spoof the name and spoof another email address. It will show up as an email from the person, but a check of the email address will show a new one. They are getting more clever.
