New ebay SNAFU

I opened up an ebay purchase in a bubble mailer today, and my XF45 1840 ND half dime magically turned into five foreign coins. image Reputable seller with lots of feedback, but he switched the shipping labels on two orders. LOL-I know who has my half dime for sure. I guess the only way to proceed is for both of us to send the items back to the seller, since if the other buyer sends me my coin for a direct swap, then there is an issue if one of the packages gets lost. I will snap a photo in case this turns into an "item not as described" transaction for some reason.

Not unusual to have the wrong item sent... it happens. What counts is how the seller resolves it.

I mailed an empty envelope to a forum member once. Left the 1885 Indian sitting on my desk. So I understand. It was still a bit of a shock to open the envelope.

I shipped the wrong coin to a guy earlier this week. Told the guy who was suppose to get it, I messed up. He was a perfect gentleman about it. Told the guy I shipped it to to please return it, on me (and that the coin he bought was right behind it) I sent him $5 on Paypal to cover mailing, etc. Hope he doesn't delay. Boy, do I feel stupid.

That happened to me once, back when the 'Bay wasn't as neg happy. When I heard from one of the buyers, I contacted the other. I asked each if they would ship to each other, which they agreed to do. I refunded each enough for the shipping and some for the hassle of doing that instead of returning both coins to me. Never got a neg or even a neutral. I became much more diligent after that.

In other news, my 1912 proof Barber quarter has arrived from Legend. Got the pink card in the mailbox this afternoon. When I pick it up at the PO on Monday, I hope I open the box and find an 1834 proof set with an 1804 dollar in it. image

I received another person's first spouse order from the mint.
He got my proof only, I got his proof and unc.

good fun from that. the pbgs rep said "you Better send that back." (imperative emphasis not my own!) Like I'm going to call, give you my name and order number then keep it? funny.

I also received an empty envelope from someone. I finally made it to halfway convincing the person it was empty by sending a scan of the envelope with just 1st class postage, then showing the weight would have demanded another stamp at least.

hours of fun for the entire family!

About 6 years ago, this guy was selling all kinds of good coins on EBay. He said it was from his late Father's collection.
I looked at all the stuff he was selling and there was quite a collection of various high end raw coins.

I was the high bidder and won a 1875-CC $10.00 gold coin. It looked to be about a 58.

The package arrived and it felt a lot lighter than it should have been.

True enough, enclosed was a 1916-D Dime, I remembered from the other items he had and
this was among the coins he was selling. I contacted him right away and he responded to me, that he had
made a horrible mistake and had wrong labels on all his packages he mailed that day. He asked me to mail
the dime back and he had been contacted by other buyers and that he would try to get it all sorted out.

My 1875-CC never reappeared. I did get my money back, but haven't been able to get another 1875-CC.

    These were the sellers pictures:

I know it looks cleaned, but for the money, it would have been sweet.

My particular seller wants the two buyers to mail the coins to each other. I guess it's no additional work to him, but he's going to lose some money if one of the packages goes missing- not me. So far, no word on reimbursing us for shipping expenses. I am an experienced coin seller, but for all I know, the other buyer could drop my coin in an ordinary letter envelope and chuck it in the mailbox without a stamp. We shall see.

Since I have such a common Anglo-Saxon name (think Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XII Champion quarterback), I've actually received coins returned as unsold lots (which belonged to another DW) from an auction house, which of course shall remain un-named. image

once swapped shipping labels on two gold saints, different dates. Both buyers wanted the date they purchased and were happy to return the wrong coin to me. Lesson learned.

while convenient for the seller I would insist on following protocol for an item that is not as described and return it. Once delivery to you was established seller was off the hook unless you take ebay action. You don't have to file the not as described claim unless it gets ugly - ebay message system will document the wrong item and seller's intent to send correct item.
