I was in the local pub near my house in North Dublin watching the England v. Wales Six Nations Rugby match with a friend when my phone buzzes. It is Paul at Common Cents Rare Coins with a note that he is at a show and has found a very choice and crusty 1842-C Small Date $5. While I do not love the value of this date/variety and thick it is over-valued, especially above EF, the vast majority of pieces have been processed. With think original skin, the 42-C SD $5 is a very tough coin.
I have been building an 1842 transitional variety set so I knew that purchasing this date/variety was inevitable. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. A few EF CAC pieces have been on the market the last two years but I found all of them to be far from choice despite the CAC designation. The date/variety does not come nice and it is quite clear that the grading services give it a bit of a break.
This date is overvalued relative to the other coins in the transitional variety set however in choice EF as this coin is, the poor value is not as bad as it may appear. This is because the vast majority of the pieces in AU are no better than EF and the EF pieces are generally with terrible eye appeal and usually cleaned.
Here is the coin with a huge thanks to Paul. Better pics to come later.

<< <i>Looks like a nice original coin. This must be the "white whale" of which you spoke. Congratulations. >>
Actually not! Though it does come from the same year with a different mintmark and has larger letters.

Ireland is not a progressive country, in any sense, with perhaps the exception of their corporate tax policies. There are about five different types of beers here. Guiness, Beamish, Heineken, Carlsberg and Coors Light. The Guiness is much better in Ireland than in the US. They make up for the lack of variety with volume.
On a side note, I do not recommend buying 5 figure coins while drinking.

Thanks as it's really disappointing to hear they just offer 2 Stouts... You can drink the other 3 especially Coors Light and still buy coins
Somehow, I missed this thread earlier.
Congrats!
It looks like a better strike for a Charlotte piece, correct?
every deal with him that i've had was a cherished one
congrats on the tough coin too
Well done.
