New 1803 half cent

For some reason (along with the 1800), I like this date in the draped bust half cent series. According to Pennywise, this date isn't as scarce as its low mintage figure suggests, but I'll scoop them up just the same. It is a date I don't see anywhere near as often as 1804 or 1806.

Lovely. I certainly love the Draped Bust Liberty in all of her incarnations. I'm partial to the Spiked Chins in half cents, but like 'em all.

The 1803 is quite a bit scarcer than either 1804 or 1805 as a date. However, it lacks the numerous interesting die varieties of the two ensuing years, and therefore tends to be ignored by variety and die state collectors. Thus, the price has never been run up. 1800 half cents are in the same boat.

That is when a 1/2 cent was worth a 1/2 cent, lot of history with this nice coin.

Great close-up pictures, you can really see the detail on it image

You new coin is a Cohen variety #3. The diagnostic is the bulge that is under the "18" in the date. It is one of the two common 1803 varieties. The common variety, Cohen #1, has a thin line (die scratch) to the right of the faction bar on the reverse.
