    Yes, was interesting.
Checking news on-line earlier and Fox had link to this.
  • Yes, I just happen to turn on the channel as it was starting about George Walton's 1913 nickel. Good program. The nickel looked like it had been wiped pretty heavy at one time.

It was the story of the re-discovery of the 5th piece
in 2003 at the Baltimore ANA, and the auction of it just two years ago.

I remember going to Baltimore to see the 5 nickels together. Went with my sister, who is a comic artist, she has no interest in coins but she wanted to see the large Carl Barks exhibit at the same ANA show.

...The show is scheduled to air again on Tuesday 9:30 PM February 10th on Fox Business Channel. It's on 106 Comcast in my neck of the woods... image Pretty entertaining!

Yes, it is quite an interesting story, and an embarrassment for Stacks' going back many years ago. They pronounced the coin to be a fake when it was in fact genuine. I can't understand how they could have blown that one. Photographs had be have been available to them of at one of the other genuine pieces for a comparison, and 10X and stronger glasses were available in "the dark ages."

The family was very lucky to have gotten the piece back from the Secret Service after they also pronounced it as a counterfeit. They have habit of confiscating and destroying things. Perhaps the wrong coin was shown to both Stacks' and the Secret Service. Walton did say that he had a piece with an altered date that he used to cover for the real coin in case of a robbery. That is the only reason I can think of that both the dealer and the government got the authentication wrong.

At any rate the family came out ahead in the end. If they had sold the coin in the coin in the mid 1960s, they probably would realized about $60,000. When they did sell it, the price was over $3,000,000.

I have it on excellent authority that the
genuine coin was shown at the Stacks
location at their 57th Street store.

I'd also say that after seeing all 5 of them
together in 2003 at the 'midnight meeting',
and looking with a strong mag. glass at the
3 in the date, I am a bit understanding in
that it might have been mis-diagnosed by someone in
the early days of 1963, seeing the one coin.

And I agree with BillJones that everyone is
lucky the Secret Service didn't confiscate it
and destroy it back then. It could have
    easily happened.
