A "bad" 1873-CC quarter

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭
This coin is immediately identifiable as a fake due to the large CC mint mark. A real one from my collection (now PCGS F12) is shown below for comparison. There is only one mintmark style for the date.

While I'm not familiar with LS quarters, that one looks very realistic. Scary. Any possibility this could be an unreported reverse die?

Not a chance. That mintmark style is from 1876-78. The obverse striking characteristics also give it away as a fake.

The 1921 merc he has listed is fake too. Plus the other stuff ("antique" pottery) he has listed is all made in China.

These coins were also, they're just not labeled as such. On ebay nowadays, it helps to look at the "metadata" of the sale. Feedback, other suspect offerings, bad spelling, crazy claims. This one has it all.

He apparently changed the pictures. The new one is also a fake.

    Someone got clobbered here also:

This one is fairly obvious....however, so many fakes are on ebay and so many are sold.... I do feel sorry for those who are scammed, but ebay is clearly 'caveat emptor'.....Cheers, RickO

These are some pretty nasty counterfeits. They have general look of the fake Morgan Dollars the Chinese are selling, but they would still be very deceptive for a collector who does not have a lot of knowledge about Seated Quartrers. The fact that they have the appearance of well worn coins make them much more dangerous. It just goes to show that you need to buy certified coins if you are not an expert, even when you are buying coins in the lower grades these days.

Even the seller can't keep the fakes straight listing the pictured 73-cc quarter as a "half dollar" through the entire listing.

anyone even considering the purchase of scarce date coins "in the buff" on ebay (or anywhere) should be aware of what to stay away from, the briggs book has been out for 100 years, I have no sympathy for any bidiot that cant open a book
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
