2013 First Spouses

Why are these still available for sale at the mint? I was under the impression that 2013's couldn't be sold after 12/31/14.

Back when the First Spouse coins were being issued about once every three months, no more than the most recent four would be on sale at any one time. When a new First Spouse was issued, the one that had been on sale the longest would be discontinued. Lately these coins seem to be an afterthought, coming out near the end of the year and remaining on sale until the supply is depleted. And we often aren't given an accurate final mintage figure until years later.

On the bright side, Jackie is approaching soon and the series will come to an inglorious end shortly thereafter.

I am surprised this series has not come to an end simply due to lack of interest. Cheers, RickO

The same could be said for the presidential dollars which have flopped as a circulating coin. When I was a dealer it seemed that the Proof versions of those coins were not doing much better with collectors. I had hard time getting much over face value for the Proof sets of presidential dollars. I don't see any reason why the market for them is doing any better now. The trouble is if the mint can mark these things and sell them for more than the cost of production, the series will continue. And if the mint can't money on them, this is government and worrying about wasting tax payer dollars has never been a high priority.

Besides, wouldn't take an act of Congress to end the First Spouse program?

Jackie is the only one that will have a maximum mintage of 30k while the other three 2015 spouse gold will be set at 10K combined MS and Proof.

The mint is expecting an increased demand for Jackie since those who bought the John F Kennedy Set will want a set of both. This is the only gold version set possible for the entire presidential spouse series.

The mint picked a decent design portrait of Jackie at least though don't like the pearls inside the dress which does not seem natural. Though the pearls were her trademark they should have been left off the design.

Of all of the First Spouse coins, the Jackie Kennedy coin will be only one that will be of interest to me.

Although potential First Ladies have appeared or been mentioned on political items since 1856 (John Fremont's wife, Jessie, was mentioned on a political medlet) this Jackie Kennedy button is unusual because of its size, almost 3 and a half inches.

And for historical interest here is the first mention of a potential First Lady on a political piece, minted in 1856. "Jessie's Choice" referred to Jessie Benton Fremont who was Fremont's wife and the daughter of the famous senator, Thomas Hart Benton.

If I remember correctly the 2013s were released in December of 2013. Apparently they made far too many, possibly 10,000 proofs and BU combined. I
suppose they dont want to melt however many they still have so they will remain on sale until hell freezes over.

LOL. That might be a long time into the future.

I would expect the 2013 Spouses to be pulled at any time. They sure aren't hot sellers.

    It depends upon the law

The first spouses are specified when to release them, but not when to stop them.

Commemorative issues are written one at a time and those generally specify sales only in year of issuance

Figure the high mark from Mary Todd Lincoln and the will be on the slightly light side for the collectors

Then add an amount for speculation and gold kennedy pairing. Number? Who knows.

I would advise the mint to do a 1 month "no ship" ordering window with no limits. But! Keep taking orders after the month. This would accomplish a gauge of demand and allow Memphis to prepare for Dday. With their ability to strike seemingly ok, the issue would be ramp up with Memphis/UPS/FedEx

31 usc 5112 places no restriction on the number issued

The mint only need provide a maximum mintage BEFORE issuance

They could match the mint's 2014 gold kennedy max x 2 in case some want both FS for a 3 coin set.

I've got my 1 extra 2014 waiting for 1 extra proof FS in a 2 coin holder. Should there be a 3 coin holder... Hmmmm. ???
