Added a new coin to my 1842 type set

Added this choice 1842-C $2.5 P45 CAC to my current set which excluding the large cent, is still all gold. Here are the $2.5's, all P45 CAC, all very tough especially the P mint:

    Lovely circulated coins.

Are you planning to go for the varieties for this year's issues as well?

That is why I started this year...cool transitional varieties.

I have the gold varieties as a "yes". I have two examples of the toughest variety, the 1842 $5 Large Letters. I still need to expensive 42-D LD and the 42-C SD $5's.

I haven't decided on the silver denominations as some of the 50c's are basically NC.

Nice group. I sometimes wonder if many of the people looking at these threads appreciate what they're viewing. So many of us collect coins with higher populations, and dodge the classic gold because of the cost of completing a set. Just finding an example of some of these dates, much less an attractive one, is a long quest.

Thanks for that! The niche of 1840's gold is very under appreciated. Consider only the 1842-D $5 above has more than 100 coins in existence, some only 50-60 (42 $2.5, 42 $5 LL, 42-O $5). Finding a nice example is really really tough!

The 1842 $5 Large Letters (two examples shown above and 2 of the 3 CAC certified coins) is the rarest Lib $5 outside the 54-S, 63, 65 and 75. There are maybe 40-50 in existence and these are probably two of 5 which have original surfaces. It is the rarest coin in the 1842 set and I happen to have found two nice ones!
