PCGS old holder gold, upgrades?

There was a great deal of interest in these coins though the guy posted over at Coin Talk: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/wts-gold-coins-several-rare.257533
WTS: Gold Coins - Several Rare

Discussion in 'For Sale'

Are there any upgrades likely with that group of coins?

    Old holder, lock upgrade?

Old holder does not mean it's a lock upgrade. I've seen some people try very hard to get an old holder coin to upgrade, even sending it in raw, with no luck.

Unless they haven't seen the light of day since they were holdered, there is no assurance they will upgrade. Generally speaking most of those OGHs that will/would upgrade have probably already been tried.

Probably not. Most of the grades on those coins don't have big swings by going up a point. Seems to me they'd have already gotten opinions on potential upgrades before offering them here. The 1910-s $10 MS63 would have a double if it upgraded. But the photos seem to show it as just an average 63. How many times have we heard the "Grandpa's Estate" story on Ebay. This time it's Grandma's Collection. It's not even really a "collection," just a mix of gold coins. Was Grandma a cherry picker?

OGH gold is pretty consistent within today's standards. Now if these were all rattlers the odds would be a lot different. And now that these coins have sat in holders for at least 15 years you have the potential to get no grades on any coins that were puttied, thumbed, or played with. Standards are a lot tougher these days in that regard.

  • It is pretty impressive how much these coins, especially the Carson city coins have appreciated over the years. When they were first slabbed the premiums were much lower so grading was probably a little tighter so as to accentuate major qualitative variation.

I don't see any upgrade potential from the pics.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I stand corrected, you pictures really softened to look of those, that 89cc is not even a high end 58 let alone upgrade Candidate
