So, anyone seen the new 2015 Kennedy Presidential Dollar?

If the coin did not say Kennedy on it, I would never know that this was JFK on the obverse.

The wrinkles under the right eye are much more prominent on the Unc.....based on the sketch of course.

Slightly more stylized than necessary, and not really a pose that I'd have chosen, but not too far off, IMO.

I like it and instantly would have recognized him. That was my first presidential election that I voted in. I'm glad the Mint got away from the 50 cent portrait with a new one.

As I recall, two covers, Kennedy on the actual cover and Nixon on the back cover (upside down) so that either side could be displayed on newsstands immediately after the election.

The right eye isn't aligned with the left eye in view of JFKs' portrait for this coin, I'm guessing JFKs' lazy right eye is part of this portrait.

    Which is too bad. MHO.

I have to look really hard to see John Kennedy in that image and it just should be that difficult.

Needless to say, I don't really care for it as the eye's just aren't correct. They look mongoloid. Neither is the hair. Kennedy's hair was more upright. More bushier. That hair just isn't right. The chin is too long. Kennedy had a shorter chin.

All in all, this looks more like an image of a Kennedy "Look a like" than it does of John Kennedy.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I was just reading about the Kennedy Presidential Dollars in The Kennedy World in Medallic Art by William R. Rice.

Seems of the 5 submitted images, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) found one too youthful and looking too much like Robert F. Kennedy, another made him look too fat, and they were not all that fond of the image that was ultimately chosen, but... after being reminded that the image was patterned after the official Kennedy portrait by Aaron Shikler in the White House, selected this one.

    image

When the designs next went to the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), "they would not endorse the chosen design saying it placed excessive emphasis on the top of his head and would not translate into a successful sculptural design."

They chose the design which the CCAC said made Kennedy look too fat.

Both recommendations were sent to the US Treasury secretary, Jacob J. Lew, who took both into consideration, and ultimately what you see in this thread was chosen.

The 5 dollar candidates can be found here:

Too bad Jackie O isn't around - she'd make the Mint change the portrait and we'd have a new variety.

I don't know what it is about the newer modern coins but they just look too computerized animation to me. Even Lincoln on the cents just doesn't look the same. It seems like the computer takes away the ability of the artist to truly come through in their work. I wish they would go back to what ever they used to do.

If I become President, I would appoint Dan Carr to take over and revamp the whole design process at the mint image His stuff looks way better IMO.

Of the 5, JFK-04 would have been my choice although the part is on the wrong side.

JFK-01 looks more like John Wayne than John Kennedy. JFK-03 looks like Ronald Reagan and JFK-05 looks like he'd just shaved off a moustache.

None of them, IMO, were worthy and actually should have been an embarrassment to whomever submitted them.

    You're right.

You see, during his presidency, Johnson just didn't have that much hair. Why the US Mint sculptors continue to effup the hair makes you wonder exactly what training they've had?

Kennedy seems to have had higher cheekbones than the coin illustrates.

I really don't like the JFK one. It's sort of creepy and for some reason I can't explain, the pose reminds me of his assassination. They never should have started this series. It seems
from the quality of the portraits that even the Mint got tired of it and are just following through.
