The Mint would have shut down production years ago if it were up to them. Lose money on the cent and nickel every year for a long time. All the to and fro about alternative metals is just dumb IMHO, but they continue with that smokescreen, but in the end it is NOT up to the Mint.

Though it is a pipe dream, the nickel, dime and cent could be eliminated with no negative affect on commerce.
We have deflated the value of currency down to that level.
On an aside, I did not know that the U.S. Navy had built any ships too wide for the Panama Canal. Thought they were all built to fit it.
