Boston Puritans & Christmas - Bah Humbug!

BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,850 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Boston Puritans banned Christmas from 1659 to 1682 because they were concerned that the celebration would not be pious enough. I guess they didn't put any Christmas decorations on their pine trees during that time.

Merry Christmas!!!

Just a couple of days ago, I read that the tradition of decorating trees at Christmas wasn't widespread until the 1870s. Funny how things change over time.....

I wonder what the puritans would make of the piety observed around Christmas today. image

They would be wondering why that thin piece of string that keeps us from falling into hell image had not burned through yet. I think that Cotton Mather came up with one during one of his all day sermons which today would be characterized as a rant.

Of course the whole Christmas tree thing has its foundation in pagan rituals, which makes Bill's pine tree decorating even funnier (and ironic).
