200 years ago - end of an era. Post a 1814 cent.

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
The last Classic head large cents were struck and delivered to the Mint Treasurer on October, 1814. By the end of the year they were all paid out. The mint would not make cents again until the following December, when they made 1816 cents with the new design.

To honor the end of an era, 200 years ago. post a 1814 cent if you have one.

Here is the piece I currently have in my collection.

And here is a piece that was once in my collection. I could not get it graded, but I think that it was nicer.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

How about from the start of the short lived Classic Head era, just to keep this thread alive?
This coin is actually a nice milk chocolate medium brown, not as dark as the photo depicts....and I apparently never bothered
taking a reverse photo, though it is equally nice.

May as well post a few more.....

This is a tougher date to find with decent color and surfaces:

This one has an interesting story....I bought a 1798 large cent from a dealer acquaintance at the Central FL show that turned out
to be a high R4 variety....I sold the coin about a month later at Summer FUN to Chris McAwley for a tidy profit - and less than 1 min from
leaving his table, the dealer who had sold me the '98 was walking by and stopped me and said, I have another large cent at my table that
you might like, and I can price it right....so I follow him back, and bought this coin using about half the profit on the '98 cherry pick:

The remaining profit plus some additional cash got me this one at the same show:

Indeed, that was an end of an era. When I own or see a coin of this time, I think of the "War of 1812". I've been taught that this conflict was about the conscription of US sailors into the British Navy. Our capitol was razed by the British, but so were the British government buildings in Toronto by us. In speaking recently to some folks from Nova Scotia, they claim victory in this war. My wife, a former history teacher, told me the British stopped fighting because of strains from other European wars.
I guess this is one of the primary reasons why I collect, to hold a piece of history in my hand.

Yes, the end of the war was even more important than the end of the "Early dates" of the large cent series. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814 ending the war. New traveled slowly, so General Jackson fought and won the Battle of New Orleans after battles fought from December 23, 1814 to January 8, 1815.
