what is the logic of limiting sale on ebay?

joebb21joebb21 Posts: 4,769 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just got this response after trying to buy another coin from a particular seller

"Sorry, you are not allowed to purchase this item
This item is only available to buyers who have not purchased 1 or more items from this seller in the past 10 days.
You can contact the seller for more information, or find similar items offered by other sellers."

The item is not a generic item but a dated gold coin.
Either way- why limit your sales? If one person wanted to buy all my items I would say great!
may the fonz be with you...always...

Limited liability I suppose if the guy is self insuring or worried about chargebacks.

    I have never encountered that.

Never seen this before and doesn't make much sense as wouldn't anyone want repeat buyers?

    Apparently not!

That said, it's likely to limit liability. It's a bit excessive to limit one item per 10 days, though.

Possibly trying to spread the "deals" to accumulate a broader customer base/mailing list? Sort of like an introductory offer price deal. Only a guess.

Could be an attempt to keep dealers and hoarders at bay.

Can be done by larger dealers as loss leader dales. Saw it done often in the furniture industry.
Or somebody clicked on the wrong box when making the listing.

I enabled this setting on my eBay a few months ago after I was hit with two waves of fraudulent orders using stolen credit card numbers through PayPal. Each time the "customer" placed four orders within two days for $1000+ coins. 99.9% of legitimate customers do not follow this purchase pattern. One legit customer blocked by this contacted me and we worked something else out.

eBay added this setting because frankly, some of their sellers need the protection.

I have found that a gentle message to the seller will have him lift the hold for you (he can do that with eBay), allowing the purchase to complete.

seller can choose this limit when creating listing. Mostly likely fears a bad buyer will hit him more than once in a short period of time on high dollar items.

First I have heard of this....but the logic presented above certainly could justify it...... If truly interested in an item, just contact the seller direct. Cheers, RickO

I've never done such a thing, and it's not uncommon for me to have repeat buyers win 5-30 items in a given week. But I could see it as useful at least for unknown buyers if there's a fear they might not pay. Imagine someone winning all (or a lot) of your listing just to not pay and make you waste a ton of time relisting.

I should add that I've had blocked buyers come back again and again before to bid in items they won't pay for, but luckily it's always been one or two items here or there. If it became a widespread problem with a grater magnitude, I could see more appeal in this way of blocking bidders. Of course many bidders also won just a few of the items they bid on. I wouldn't want their ability to drive up my prices to go away, because they're helpful as under bidders just as much as they are as winners.

I am going to have to look for this setting. But not really sure it would be of much use.

I would never ship unless PayPal says it is Ok to do so. If PayPal tells you to ship, and then it turns out the payment method is fraudulent, aren't you covered by their policy. Has this changed?

Correct. Only had one fraudulent chargeback and PP ate it.

Sure, the PayPal policy applies if PP says it's okay to ship (as they did for my fraudulent orders a few months ago).

However, on general principal, I try to avoid shipping coins to bad guys if I can.

When PayPal covers a loss, PayPal loses, the seller breaks even, and the bad guy wins.

It's in the same place as no negs FB buyers, no polic violation buyers, etc.

There is a limit to what they'll cover. Beyond that you are on your own.

The buyer limits can be used a number of ways by sellers for such wide ranging reasons as limiting liability on high value sales, on potential non-performing auction bids, or loss leaders to generate a mailing list. I'm sure there are others.

I have encountered it a number of times. Most frequently when I try to put bids on a large number of coins from one seller. I have no idea why.

Its called "lets cleanup this transaction then we will do another one"

Lets let make payment clear, make sure everyone is happy then do some more.

Sounds like a good strategy on big ticket items, a common sense approach to buffer against bad buyers. I may look into it. It has been ages since anyone on ebay bought multiple items from me in one transaction or short period.

    Definitely contact the seller.

    Could be an Ebay glitch.

It is a selection in the seller preferences section that can be set when establishing ones self as a seller. I don't believe the 1 purchase per 10 days is the default setting. It has to be manually chosen.

For coins and bullion, if paypal processes the ebay payment they will fully protect the buyer. Only exception is CC chargebacks that they will help to fight but not cover in event chargeback goes through.
