For any 89 set rookies, I'd go with UD.
  • 1988 Fleer Update Glossy.

That's an easy one since he only has 1 MLB rookie - '88 Fleer Update (or the Glossy version).
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

    this
    What I Collect:

PSA HOF Baseball Postwar Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 80.51% Complete)

PSA Pro Football HOF Rookie Players Set Registry- (Currently 19.80% Complete)

PSA Basketball HOF Players Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 6.02% Complete)
  • Due to the popularity of 1989 Upper Deck, that card will probably win out in the end. I think it looks better than the 1988 Fleer Update glossy as well.

+1 on the 1986, but beware of the counterfeits. There are tons out there if you're not aware...

One thing that I really love about the '88 Fleer Update is that he's pictured in his actual debut game, at Shea Stadium. You can't get much rookier than that.

I agree about the '89 UD being the most appealing of his '89 cards. If you want a sleeper from that year, his '89 Donruss Baseball's Best is a great looking card, far nicer than his rookie from the regular set.

I love the 88 Fleer Glossy, and I do love the Donruss Baseball's Best sets. They were glossy and much harder to find than the regular set (which is saying nothing).
The 89 UD set however, I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole. I think they're still printing those somewhere in CA.

Did all of these have Smoltz being born in 1957 instead of 1967 or is that an error?

Appears to be an uncorrected error as I have a few of these cards and they all say 57.

Yup lots of them around but they are easy to spot. It's almost always in the font on the front. Check out ebay seller stan111 who sells lots of 1986 Procards in GEM holders. All are fake.

Here is a typical font example of a fake vs. a real one that's in the PSA holder:

For HOF PSA collector this is the best card to get. Glossy like Topps Tiffany were produce in lesser quality.
  • His rarest MLB card from '88 to '89 is the 1989 Bowman Tiffany.

The only thing Smoltz I have that's rare is a 1989 Canadian Donruss pack with his rookie card showing on the back.

You are right. Glossy version sold for $405 Auction Price for Real

There is Buy it Now & nobody notice because very few people bother to check BIN section. BIN with Best Offer
  • What the heck is the value of this card? PWCC sold one for $400 this month. There are several BINs on Ebay for $200-$270. That $199 best offer is a great deal right?
  • I see the PWCC one was from the Dmitri Young collection so that explains it a little. But is $200 a good price for this card?

PWCC card was either a shiller or someone got caught with an atomic snipe against another crazy person.

No, $200 is still too much. VCP average is $75 including that crazy $400 sale.

  • $75 should be the price of a non glossy if I'm not mistaken, which is a large upswing from before he got elected.

VCP could be showing incorrect data but it definitely shows just under $75 for the glossy.

A 1989 Topps Tiffany went for $330 this week from PWCC. Obscene price, nearly 2x the previous VCP average.
