New addition to Classic Head $5 set

I would like to share with Classic Head and Gold collectors a new addition to a set I have been working on for some time. It resides in an NGC MS 60 holder, has some subtle, semi PL surfaces and has been in one family for over 150 years. Also, I would like to thank Doug Winter in assisting me in the acquisition.

    Congratulations.

I have been for this coin for 3+ years. I wish I had seen THAT picture of it. The picture in the auction and their description of coin led me away from it. I asked the auction house for more information, and they never responded to my emails.

You lucky to found it, and I guess I've got be like that fox that is looking up at the grape bush. image

Very attractive coin. A very tough date to find with nice eye appeal as BillJones above knows. Congrats.

    Bill,

I was fortunate to have it carefully previewed and discussed the images and review in detail.

Classic Head $5 fans don't worry, the Bass-Pogue specimen will be available next year! That will be really interesting.

That one will be out of my price range for sure. It will sell for more than the most I have ever paid for a coin in the past, perhaps by a wide margin.

That is a special coin, congratulations!

For the non-CHG collectors: the 1838-C $5 is the rarest of all CHG $ 2 1/2 and $5 in high grade. The Bass specimen mentioned is graded PCGS 63, the only PCGS coin graded in Mint State and by far the finest 38-C known. NGC has a but a few coins graded mint state, including this coin. It only gets a bit better, as there are only about 8 coins that grade AU-58 from both services (after adjusting for errors in the pop reports).

This coin didn't come cheap, but I think it was a great purchase for you.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
