1838-D Half Eagle - 12 Years Later My Dahlonega Type Set Is Complete

After nearly 12 years this 1838-D Half Eagle completes my Dahlonega Type Set. I will contribute a post in the next few days on the nine piece set but thought I would celebrate a bit with posting this nifty coin tonight.
The 1838-D half eagle is a coin with a high level of demand due to its status as the first year of issue and the only denomination minted in 1838. It is also a distinct one year type coin: the only Classic Head half eagle from Dahlonega. Unlike most examples of this date, this coin has likely never been messed with, and as such makes it quite rare. This coin has been carefully preserved and is desirable yellow (green) gold color typical of Dahlonega Gold. Just a touch of rub, likely the result of cabinet friction, results in the appropriate AU58 grade.

Wow! An awesome set.
Congrats
I also viewed your set, very impressive. As a Classic Head guy, your Classic 39-D quarter Eagle is awesome. However, it was your other 39-D I could not take my eye off. The pic of that $5 Lib is great, I'm sure it is a stunner in hand.
<< <i>Superb collection. I especially love the 1839-D $5. >>
+1, Congrats!

Indeed! My thoughts exactly.

FadeToBlack...Thanks for the collages. They look great and will make for an awesome poster size print for my office.
mrcommem, your 38-D is fabulous. There were about a half dozen AU 38-Ds in the North Georgia collection and everyone I have seen has been special. I almost acquired one early this year but apparently the seller was just fishing and backed out of the deal.
I have watched your collection over the years too, and a beauty it is. Your 54-D Three is the most amazing struck I have ever seen. My first instinct was it is fake. Never seen full dentils before and likely never will.
Your number 1 ranking is safe from me. I have no intention of upgrading my three and at VF25 with a weight of 6 my rating will always be a bit mired in mediocrity
Again, Thanks Everyone!

About Findley Ridge
I have everything for the Dahlonega Mint type set except the 1839-D half eagle, which I'm not sure I'm going to get. It is well below the 1838-C half eagle on my radar. I've been looking for the 1838-C for three + years with no success. I have found coins, but nothing has been even half way what I would call attractive. There are many cleaned and scared up coins of that issue.
