Scans added to my non major sport "Rookie Cards" checklist Boxing, Soccer, Wrestling, Tennis, Golf,

I finally got around to scanning all of these. I'm working on the major sports now and the Star Jordan thread has really got me tempted to pull the trigger on that one. I started a Checklist Thread a few years ago about rookie cards from sports outside of the big 4. I started just looking for boxing but it grew into something completely ridiculous and includes cricket even Jai Lai. Well that's sort of a joke because a buddy asked if I had any Jai lai cards. Here are scans .. some might be cards you don't see every day. I Used ticket stubs for the horseracing because there were no cards from around the time horse actually raced. This is just a list I came up with based on popularity and googling things like "top 25 tennis players of all time" if i'm missing anyone obvious chime in.

Awesome thread! All very cool. I really enjoy getting educated on cards outside the 4 majors.

Particular interest for me, the Pele, the George best, and my favorite...the signed Andretti!

    Thanks for sharing.

These are awesome. Curious about the Rocky sticker, why did you choose that one as his "rookie card"? I don't know anything about that set but am guessing he's on several cards?

Thats alot of work. Much thanks for your efforts. I liked the horse racing and Nascar items. The best 3 Triple Crown races for me were the 1978 ones so was really interested in that ticket. Got the original Saratoga program from 1978 Travers at Saratoga when Affirmed was DQ'ed with the win awarded to Alydar.

Thanks. I just picked that card in the Rocky set because I liked the pic of him. I just sort of threw Rocky and me t in there.

Awesome cards and always appreciate some golf love! I didn't know the Payne Stewart and Mickelson rookies, though I happen to have the 92 Phil. Mine has Silver borders and yours appear to be black from the scan? I guess that will have to go in my next sub.

The mickelson has a silver foil boarder too. It's just the scan. I don't love that card but so much earlier than his upper deck I had to go with it

Awesome stuff as always. It is nice to see it in a single thread.

    A couple points:

Why did you go with a 1926 Spalding Weissmuller instead of the 1921 W551 (relatively easy to find and pretty inexpensive) or the 1924 Willard Chocolate (a bit tougher but not super high cost)?

Too bad the Kahanamoku RC's are so pricey, that would be fun to get as well.

Absolutely fantastic to see Gary Gait in there but it seems really incomplete to only have Gary but no Paul Gait along side him. Gotta get that one too, in addition to what I'm sure is a large list of other cards you're looking to add to this collection, not just lacrosse but other sports too.

We all look forward to seeing what is added next.

  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,676 ✭✭✭
good feedback about the Weissmuller.. to be honest i never knew about a card from 1924.. i'll look into it. I think the 1921 card is a strip card.. is that right? i tried to pick a factory cut card over a handcut cards if there was one produced around the same time.. i also tied to eliminate cartoon drawings.. like the 47 boxing set and oversized cards like the sports casters. In some cases it was just personal preference but in other cases its just ignorance.. like in this case. There are always new cards popping up that I never knew about or that psa doesnt grade yet that i'm looking to add. I just got a 1980 McEnroe card from argentina that i have to get graded along with a 1966 Ashe. The 1966 set has been approved for grading but the 1980 Deportistas Argentinos set still needs some work.

A huge portion of Weissmuller's cards, throughout many years of production, were misspelled as Weismuller instead of Weissmuller. What you have is the earliest of the two-S cards. So if you just looked up the name on the pop report, you'd have missed a lot of cards too. Take a look at the master set composition (it is filed under "non-sport: entertainment" instead of "misc-sports: vintage misc-sports (Pre-1970)" since half his cards are from his acting career and half his cards are from his swimming career). And yes, the 1921 W551 is a strip card, so you're probably more interested in the 1924 Willard.

Love that you took my suggestion a while back to pick up a Valentino Rossi.

I understand the Hemmets and it sounds like you didin't want the 1962 Swedish Rekord Journal due to it being a hand-cut issue, but is the reason you didn't go with the 1964 Chocolates Simon Cassius Clay due to the size of the PSA holder?

  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,676 ✭✭✭
That's exactly why. I was debating between hammets and Lampo but ended up going with the lampo. The orange card was an option too.

I just got this in the mail. It's the closest to a ticket from a seabiscuit race I could find. I really want something from Narraganset Park but this will do for now. He raced in a few Races at San Anita in 1937. The first race he won there was the Huntington Beach Handicap on 2/9/1937. I'm hoping to get this Slabbed and have that race mentioned. He ran in the San Anita handicap which is more popular but lost. I think this will look great slabbed next to the other tickets

I agree. I hate the way they labeled it. Hopefully Psa will decide to grade them. I'm worried that even if they do decide to grade it they will just label it the way BGS did

He has another card in the set that is more of portrait. But he is wearing a suit.. Looks more like an actor to me .. Sort of like the 1922 Chanpions Jack Dempsey card. I picked the in action for my collection

I see the 51 Berk Ross panel/single frequently listed as the Ben Hogan rookie. Is there any reason the 48-49 Exhibit is not? Just due to large size perhaps?
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,676 ✭✭✭
that was my reason. I tried to pick the first "card" that was the closest to a traditional trading card. Fitting in a standard size slab was key and being factory cut was also important to me. I intentionally threw out the sports casters cards from the late 70s because they were so over sized. But some i just messed up on and wasnt aware of an earlier card that board members pointed out.

I thought that seve were oversized like the sports casters.. I would def be interested if they were like a standard size trading card. Do you know anything about them? I tried to research these as much as I could but there are always new cards popping up I didn't know about

I still think you could add a low grade Gorgeous George to the collection here. He was pretty influential on showmanship and you know that athletes are all about it now days. A Parkhurst in low grade would not run you much to add if you are looking to expand just a little. Great collection of diverse cards. I wish I could supply you with a standard size card of Bruno Sammartino, but I don't know of any out there. One of the most underrated cards in that whole collection is the signed Randy Couture. I hope that could be red flipped one day.....the UFC guys should go nuts over it.

I should prob add a gorgeous george. There are few additions I could make. I think the couture could get slabbed by psa now. The set is in the Beckett checklist database. I don't think I could ever get some of the other mma cards in psa slabs so just kept that sport in bgs for now. Unless anyone has some information on that Liddell card. I was able to date it because it had his age on the back but I haven't been able to find anything else about other cards in the set ect. Apparently it was distributed with DVD/VHS but I can't confirm that either. I really like it because it's so much earlier than his mainstream mma cards

There's two others on eBay right now; they're just ridiculously priced. I think you scored that one for a great deal, the poor description didn't hurt, looked like about a PSA 4-5? I would have bid a lot stronger if I didn't have so many other snipes that day.

Psa finally accepted these for grading. The grades just popped. This was one of the more difficult sets to get in PSA slabs. I'm looking forward to seeing how they look. Mario Andretti and Maradona are also in the set.
