How long do you go in between viewing your coins?

BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭✭
As some may know, I live overseas and just came back to the US for a few weeks. I am anxious to see my coins again and the few newps which I acquired from trusted sources since my last visit back. It got me thinking how long does the average forumite go in between viewing their collection.

Weeks or months.... usually to add NewPs or remove others to sell. I look at my photos of them every day on my screensaver though. It's the only way I could tolerate moving them all to a SDB.

I normally go months. They sit it the sdb and I don't visit often. Visits are mainly to check what I have or pop in an upgrade, both rare occurrences.

Every day unless traveling....Of course I do not look at all of them, but some get viewed every day. Cheers, RickO

With the modern day luxury of having fabulous digital pics I look at them very often on the computer. This may be why I don't bother to open the safe
and dig it all out which would be probably every 2 - 3 months. Other than that I do look at some when I get a newp that has to be put away with the rest.

Most are in banks so I see them every few months when I change the desiccants.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

Wow, I was thinking about this earlier today, that is, when was the last time I looked at my personal collection. Over a year. I add to it periodically, but haven't looked at the whole in quite a while. I am always amazed at what is in it as I sometimes forgot what is in it.

Today is the day I am going to break into it to look for coins that I know longer need to add to my growing error coin website.

For me, it varies greatly. I am in a lull or down period. I recently looked over everything for the first time in about 2 months.

Usually at least a month in between visits for me. Sometimes even longer. Fortunately, I keep images on my computer of some of the really cool coins.

It is a rare event I have my entire collection home to look at.

I have a glass jar of old circulated coinage I kept on my desk to see everyday, but I had the house painted and put new carpet in and had to hide all my coins.
I'm pretty sure nobody stole it, I just can't find it.image

For those of us who collect copper and silver, our coins should be viewed every few months, even if locked in a safe deposit box. It might not be too late to catch a spot that started to appear, or discover some other form of environmental damage (e.g. ugly toning) in its early stages.

One coin that comes to mind was a screaming red gem 1853 large cent that my friend bought for $3500 back in 1986. I bought it from him for just $175 15 years later when we took it out of the SDB and found a carbon spot the size of a pencil eraser on it. Calling the coin doctor....

In hand about once a month. Startling how common that answer is here.

What a strange, strange hobby this has become.

We buy expensive coins, lock them up in plastic and then bury them in a safe deposit box.

But we keep photos of them on our computers to satisfy our egos and to assure bragging rights. This is coin collecting?

Well I for one, think this is dumb and I am not going to do it anymore. I am still collecting but I am not hoarding plastic anymore.

I am still collecting. I bought a nice 3-cent silver and a beautiful type two S L Quarter. Both in PCGS holders. Now they are in a Dansco 7070 album.

No more hoarding for me. I am going to collect again. Things that I can enjoy looking at any time I like. I feel so free!!!

I think most of us keep them locked up for security reasons and plastic (to some degree) for preservation reasons. Additionally I have them in
Intercept Shield boxes, again for preservation. The pics are a bonus and an alternative to viewing. I don't see it as any sort of an ego boost.

    When I add a coin.

I do tend look at my registry sets regularly. So, any that have a photo there I see then.

I can't stand locking them in the SDB. I actually scaled back my collection because I was not comfortable with over a ---k in coins in the house even with more insurance to cover the bulk of them. So I cut back about 50 percent and now I rotate them thru the safety deposit box, keep about a 1/3 at home. Never fails I will want to look at a coin and it is in the SDB.

I have some really good hiding places, in fact I have a few coins missing cause I hid them so well.

I'm a 2-3 month kinda collector. But, when I do bust em out I find coins I forgot I bought, it's always a good time.
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
