Funny that I come across this thread today! This morning I was dropping off my daugher at school (7).
A young lady (she works there) gets off the passenger side and walks over to the driver side, has a small conversation with the driver (a female) and then they kiss goodbye. This is ouside an elementary school right when all the children are being dropped off. I didn't know what to do. All I can think of was to distract my daughter.

OK, go back in time 50 or 60 years and replace the two females with individuals of different races, one of each. Now ask the same question again. Is/was there really anything to distract against? The same arguments were being made decades ago about interracial relations. In another 50 or 60 years (hopefully less), the above won't even be asked.

Agreed. The Scouts should not be "punished" for the PC or non-PC ideas of the Boy Scout leadership.

With all due respect to everyone, the original post was about a letter sent to the Board of Governors of the American Numismatic Association regarding its support of the Boy Scouts of America at its coin shows. Anyone who has been to the ANA show knows that the ANA works very closely with scouting. I consider the topic to be directly related to collecting coins since the ANA is the largest coin collecting organization in the U.S.
I think the problem is what happened after the original post because this is such a hot potato political and social topic. No matter how much we argue or discuss this topic, we will never all be in agreement. My advice is to agree to disagree and don't take things personally that you read on the coin forum when they are so generic in nature.
Can someone post a two cent piece for me cause that's what I just gave?
Oh, just one more...what info would you like to share about this coin, to MAKE it coin related...it really still isn't coin related, you've only shown A coin, actually it's merely a picture of a coin, but any info will make it acceptable.

This is a U.S. coin forum; that's a U.S. coin. I'll give you a hint. It's a commemorative dollar related to the topic. You figure out the rest.
As an eagle scout, father of an eagle scout, former scoutmaster and current cubmaster I'm what you could call an "interested party". There's more than one issue in play here.
1. The actual communication described by the OP.
Members of an organization have the right to petition the organization for certain actions or viewpoints. In this case, the decision of the ANA to let the scouts decide how to run the scouts is my position as well. I don't disparage the opinion of the letter writer, as he is within his rights to request anything he'd like, but in this case we have a difference of opinion.
2. The change of societal standards.
The Judeo-Christian ethic and heritage of this country have been steadily changing since the Revolutionary War. Most of the change has been good and much has been done to remove bigotry, bias, and unfair treatment of minority groups. We are not there yet, nor will we ever be as things continue to evolve. The bedrock principles of Liberty and preservation of the rights of all humans should be the basis for the debate. Like it or not, the opinion of each person is of equal validity. Name-calling is not the way to make progress. Discussing the politics of such a charged topic as same-sex marraige or homosexuality is way, way beyond the scope of a numismatic forum.
3. The rights of private institutions.
As is true for individuals, non-governmental entities should be free to chose for themselves how to act, who to admit, and how to conduct their business provided they preserve the Liberty and rights of others. Where exactly to draw the line is sometimes hard to distinguish. No individual has ever been forced to join the scouts. I disagree with many organizations (the KKK and neo-Nazi's, to pick an extreme example), but I will fight forever to preserve their right of free speech and right to assemble. Every single one of us is part of some minority group and is in CONSTANT jeopardy of losing our individual Liberties. Tolerance and mutual respect are essential. There is no quantity or quality of legislation that can be an effective substitute for trust and brotherly love.
If organizations are not free to set their own standards, who does the deciding? If not the organization, it must be the state. Once that happens we've begun the slide into a totalitarian society. History bears ample witness to the rights of the individual once that happens.
4. Scouting and numismatics.
The coin collecting merit badge is cool! I never earned it. I should have. I would love to be a counselor for it.

These are all noble opinions, but the trouble with Federal Government today is that it believes that it has the right dictate values and codes of conduct to every person and organization, public and private. Beware of anyone who lines up with Eric Holder as the writer of this letter did. As Attorney General Mr. Holder has told public prosecutors that they are within their rights not enforce statues with which THEY do not agree. That is a very dangerous policy. We need to live by the rule of law, not by the in opinions of individual government officials.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
<< <i>I learned much and have many fond memories from my decades as a boy scout, scout leader, and committee member. During that time I have watched many boys mature into men, scouting was not only a positive influence it played a very important role in their development. Personally the coin collecting merit badge inspired me to continue collecting coins. Growing up is tough enough without encouraging young boys who are still learning, trying new things, and making mistakes, to choose alternative life styles. Looking back I am very thankful that my scout leaders/role models were heterosexuals. I applaud the ANA's decision. >>
As a Scout Leader and with a son who is a Tiger Cub, I have a better opinion of the ANA now than before I read this post.

Discussing the politics of such a charged topic as same-sex marriage or homosexuality is way, way beyond the scope of a numismatic forum.
As another Eagle Scout and current Cub Scout Den Leader, I agree with this post 100%! Thanks for putting into words everything I've been thinking since the OP started the thread. Oh, and ditto on point 4.
