I recently acquired this 50-D gold dollar. Only three more dollars to go to complete the Dahlonega gold dollar set. Special thanks to Doug Winter

Lady Liberty has a serene expression there.

Lovely coin. I wish I could afford to collect sets of stuff like that.

I only just acquired my first (and destined to be only) Dahlonega coin earlier this year.*

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

That is a nice set. I know how hard it is to find those coins because I've been working on a set myself. '

The 1850-D gold dollars were very poorly made. After some research, I think the cause was that the Chief Coiner at the Dahlonega mint left in 1849 and a new, probably less experienced man took his place. I think that he was not prepared to prepare the dies for use. The 1850-D in my collection is a fatly struck EF-45.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Very nice. A very tough set to complete. IMO you have the toughest with the Type II 1855-D. The 61-D will hit your wallet a little harder but they come to market more often.

Beautiful set! I agree with JJ, the 55-D is tough but the 61 will put a major dent in the wallet. I have even tougher holes to fill, 55, 56, and 61.
Here is a 54-D that would fit nicely:

Most interested numismatists would agree that such a set is historically significant and further completion of it merits praise. I am glad that you shared images of your acquisitions.

Presumably, most collectors of Dahlonega Mint coins are or potentially are interested in the Southern Gold Rush and the origins of the Dahlonega Mint. Moreover,, most kids spend much more time learning about the California Gold Rush. Few U.S. citizens understand the importance of the earlier Southern Gold Rush.

In article on 1861-D Half Eagles, I discuss the history of this Mint.

I missed this coin when I posted the other gold dollars in my collection. It is graded by PCGS XF40 and carries a gold CAC sticker.
