Just got scammed

So I'm lucky that this wasn't a big dollar item. Just got scammed on an 80's wax pack from Topps called Video City. Arrived today open, ripped, and no gum. It was sealed pretty tight in the envelope, so unless the post office is running a wax pack gum scam...well, you get the point. So I called them on it and they claim they nothing about it and the sale is final. I promptly informed them that no sale is final when it ends this way and to expect to hear from ebay. People are idiots sometimes...geez.

What's the scam? Someone is marauding through the Ebay marketplace with a satchel full of $.50 resealed wax packs?

As long as there was free shipping, I don't see the problem.

  • Shipping wasn't free. If it was free I wouldn't be pushing for anything. More than anything it's the principle not the cost.

That is highway robbery. Instead of giving him a negative, maybe 0 stars all the way around. The ultimate star dinging opportunity

I agree with you Chris, it sucks, and it's the principle of it that bugs you. I'm sorry that happened to you.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
i'm not sure it's marauding, anyways. seems more like skipping merrily.
  • I know this isn't like anything huge, but it makes me mad when people do this kind of stuff. It's ridiculous and I agree that resealing .50 cent packs is pretty lame and stupid. However, I personally feel like if they can get away with it on a cheap pack, what's to stop them from trying with other stuff?

  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
A lot of sellers require the buyer to mail the card(s) back at their own cost.

It sounds like it would be an even greater losing proposition in this case.

I did a search and these have traded as low as 25 cents a pack without shipping charges included.

Do you plan to send the pack back?

  • BoopottsBoopotts Posts: 6,784 ✭✭
What do you think happened here- that the seller was opening these packs to search for the Zaxxon scratch-off cards? How can there be a scam involved when the articles of interest have no monetary value?
  • You know man, I have no idea. I agree...why would someone do this? Maybe to practice on...I have no idea. I think it's pretty stupid myself. But they have sports packs on their page as well and who knows, they could be resealed too. People do stupid stuff for weird reasons that I don't assume or try to understand.

This happened to me once: I had what I thought was a legit pack of Pac-Man cards, but when I went to open it, the 3rd card in was Inky and it had a big crease through the middle. There's no way a card the middle of a pack could be creased, so I drew the only assumption I could- the seller is walking around with a perfectly MINT Clyde which when graded would sell for a pretty penny.

I felt like such a fool.

    White or yellow wrapper?

It was the more common yellow wrapper, but I don't see why that has anything to do with it. A scam's a scam.

I don't think I have it in me to ding stars on a $2-$3 purchase, particularly when it may not be the seller's fault (could be a Topps QC thing from back in the day).

I emailed a seller once on an item that was 99 cents plus shipping, but due to poor packaging, the item was damaged. I brought it up to the attention of the seller just to see what his response would be. My feedback was going to be based on his response. Well, he went off on me, so I gave him a negative. He even tried to dispute the feedback I gave him, but it stuck. For some reason, he thought I must be lying since it was only a 99 cent item, although I paid around $5 including shipping.

I understand why Guru feels bad.

It is odd that someone would search these packs when the cards do not have value.

Maybe someone was looking for a specific card and then resealed the entire box. Not out of the realm of possibility.

This is correct. A pack with no gum does not mean it's resealed. Think about it, if you were resealing a pack, wouldn't you want it to at least appear legit? In any case, I have had (and opened) wax packs with no gum that were 100% authentic.

Sometimes I feel we're all getting so paranoid that we see re-sealed packs, trimmed cards and frosted PSA cases everywhere we turn. It's obviously prudent to be careful, but it's hard to imagine having fun with a hobby at this level of hyper-vigilance.

Why? What did the seller do wrong? I am fairly confident he is not searching for the Pac Man limited edition whatever card. All sales are final so all sales are final. Why ding the seller?

I am not knocking guru but I think he is off base to assume the packs were searched. It just doesn't make any sense. Plus, if someone actually searched the packs wouldn't they leave the gum in there!?

Wait a minute is today April 1st!?

you guys are overthinking this way toooo much. seller just needed a stick of gum when he was getting pulled over.
  • NickMNickM Posts: 4,895 ✭✭✭
If a scammer wanted to make "homemade" Topps baseball or football packs from that era, opening cheap nonsports packs and taking the gum out would be a good way to get gum that would match the original pack. At that point, what will they do with the opened, gumless nonsports pack?
    Reseal and sell?

We've seen the reseal kits sell for big money. I'm thinking one of two things could be going on (for conspiracy theorists)
    1. Person wanted just the gum because it matched something else he wanted to reseal
    2. Person is making "reseal kits" to sell
