You can speak your mind and be respectful, if he could not see he crossed the line with his comments he should be nuked. He had been pushing the envelope for a while in my opinion. You can be full of energy and knowledge but at times you need to refrain and see another day. You know the rules up front so no surprise, he had probably been warned a few or more times in the past. I got scolded a couple of times in the past so I doubt it was a one and done. He can always start his own website. I had one for years and it was not to bad price wise, until you get a lot of traffic then you got to spend a few bucks.

Our host plays a very passive role here on this forum and seems to prefer that this forum be focused on the collection hobby on general and not a customer service complaint forum. The definition of restoration services is perhaps more subjective than global warming. To publicly deride our host's business practices on such a subjective issue was a little beyond the pale. The essence of conservation has been discussed in many previous threads and Stone was clearly not plowing any new dirt in his comment.
That said, I thought the "original" toning was motley at best and removing it not much different than removing PVC residue. And to those that collect coins with original surfaces, Good Luck. My collecting experience extends over 50 years and I have come to realize that standards change over time and generally for the benefit of collectors.
I hope that Stone will one day post on this forum, and he will come to understand that his communication skills should be structured to create the change that he seeks, without alienating our hosts and the hobby in general.

this presumes that no warning was given(it may have been) but Don is on record stating no warning will be given. also, I have it on good word that at least one member had PM's Stone about an earlier comment several weeks ago urging him to edit his post and back-off a little. he chose not to heed that sound advice.
as for the sacrificial lambs that might choose to take action, that seems unreasonable.
I normally do not comment on these issues but perhaps something can be learned by everyone.
The offending poster already had been warned on two previous occasions. This was his third strike. Don't assume you know what is happening in the background because you don't. We respect everyone's privacy.
These forums exist as a service to PCGS invited guests. They are intended to facilitate the sharing of information, the joy of collecting and all the observations, stories and the other fun stuff we experience.
We don't mind, and even encourage, a healthy debate during the sharing of informed opinions. That doesn't mean tolerating emotional and ignorant statements that defame PCGS or anyone else. I made that very clear in the rules. The rules were born out of a necessity which unfortunately continues today.
This was the straw that broke the camel's back - PCGS is the biggest hypocrite in numismatics regarding coin doctoring.
<< <i>A huge loss to the members here. This way of handling free speech has to change. >>

Upgrade the forum software to something with better tools for moderators. The standard is to have an infraction system (points for screw ups) where privileges are lost as points accumulate. Points may or may not expire based on the severity of the offense. Granted, software and moderation cost time and money, but if you are serious about building a good online community where good users get to stick around, but are kept in line, that investment is required.
But with that said, PCGS doesn't owe this (or anything) to us, so don't take this as whining -- it's just the solution you asked for.

Pretty reasonable, it seems to me -- thanks for the post, Don.
Rules are rules. If you don't like or agree with them, you may have to leave. If you choose to stay, but just can't seem to sit on your hands then don't be shocked if you're shown the door regardless of any perceived dichotomy. As long as everyone is treated equally, there should be no surprises. The fact that an individual is well liked or abhorred should have no bearing on the situation.
"to you, a hero is some kind of weird sandwich..."
Lots of replies here expressing the hope that this is a temporary ban or time-out.

Who is so qualified to pass judgment on another human being especially absent all the facts
Some of you people are so perfect .. People can have personal accountability - and people still make mistakes. Not everybody goes through their whole adult life without having to apologize for having said or done something ill-advised or during the heat of the moment.
Many of these people who are so quick to judge and cry foul are the same people that would be begging the cop to not write them that speeding ticket -
Some people go their whole life without having to ask for a second chance or say sorry
Frauds and phonies and totally unrealistic speaking from the dais up in the sky
I see no reason for probationary periods, short time outs and the like, it would be a nightmare to enforce and keep track of who has a strike, foul or a ball. It is not hard to figure out what is and is not acceptable to post.
The only change I would like to see is a easier way to post pics. I am still clueless to do it.

Thanks to Don for sharing the details. Nobody wants to ban a user, so this was fair as I expected.
Dipping will always be a divisive issue.
But to keep this a friendly and positive environment, we have to be tolerant of things that we may dislike. If a user is unable to compromise in this way, they won't be able to participate in the rest. It's worth being tolerant.
It probably does no good to comment on these kinds of issues. We don't know the details and dwelling on such things just detracts from the experience for people. It's always painful when good posters are banned and it's certainly proper to comment that someone is/ was a good poster but more than this is probably detrimental. How can we know the circumstances so all that's left is being certain the powers that be know what we think.
Obviously the banning of someone of Stone's otherwise high stature is important news.

I was going to comment even before seeing this. I appreciate your sensitivity to the issue.
I don't know the poster in question and have never communicated with him. I don't know about the legal actions taken by PCGS regarding coin doctoring or whom they might be going after (if anyone).
I do know that PCGS has (apparently rather recently) gotten into the coin conservation business and I personally think that it's a good idea to have problem coins conserved because there are less and less problem free coins and they aren't making them anymore.
What I also know is that it's not a good idea to take pot shots at the host. It's bad form and suggests the poster has an axe to grind.
That all said, the banning of a popular poster tends to result in the occasional 5 page thread and like it or not, sheds light on the issues raised. I don't know how productive that really is?
If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

Good point. I'm surprised the thread wasn't deleted after the bashing first began.

He must have known what was going to happen by making such an inflamatory and insulting post. This wouldn't the first time a forum member committed suicide by moderator.

The only change I would like to see is a easier way to post pics. I am still clueless to do it.

I count on all of you to be self policing.

"WoW" Thanks for the update Don.
Hoard the keys.
Nobody wants to ban a user, so this was fair as I expected.
Dipping will always be a divisive issue.
But to keep this a friendly and positive environment, we have to be tolerant of things that we may dislike.
If a user is unable to compromise in this way, they won't be able to participate in the rest.
It's worth being tolerant.
and dwelling on such things just detracts from the experience for people. It's always painful
when good posters are banned and it's certainly proper to comment that someone is/ was
a good poster but more than this is probably detrimental. How can we know the circumstances
so all that's left is being certain the powers that be know what we think.
Obviously the banning of someone of Stone's otherwise high stature is important news.

I was going to comment even before seeing this. I appreciate your sensitivity to the issue.
