A's had it, had it, nope, had it again, then...PLOP! Too late for the heimlich, call the coroner because this one's dead!

They had a 4-run lead, blew that. Scratched a run, blew that then completely destructed. Folks, this game was their season in a nutshell: were cruising comfortably then found ways to let their opponents back in then completely shot themselves in the head. Not shot themselves in the foot, but in the head. Royals get lots of credit for never giving up. Give more credit to the A's for finding creative ways to lose. Another 1 'n done postseason for the A's.

A's baseball really is green collar baseball. Green is the color one turns when they choke to death. The meltdown is complete. This meltdown was so fabulous even the San Jose Sharks are in awe. No Oakland based team may win another game for the rest of 2014.

They fed off the negative energy the A's were giving off after the top of the 7th inning. They had a 4-run lead, gave up run after run from asinine errors. They deserved to lose. It was their season in a nutshell. Lester's gone, half the team will be traded off between now and next July. There is no next season for this team and if there is it'll be another 1 'n done season. Even the Sharks are impressed.

I suspect that when the NBA season starts in one month the Warriors will win at least one game in November and december,
    2014.

Although they play 300 feet away from the A's I personally don't consider the Warriors an Oakland team. They've wanted out of Oakland for years. If all goes as planned for them they won't be in Oakland after 2017. Warriors will probably be about the same as they were last season. That would be good enough to make the playoffs but not to be a championship contender.

Yeah, the Warriors have only been playing in Oakland for the past 43 years, and I still call them the team from Philly.

Since the Warriors (plus the A's, Giants, Sharks, Raiders, Cal, Stanford and make even the 49r's) are not championship contenders they should just forfeit the entire season. Why bother. Same goes for all other NBA teams except Cleveland and San Antonio. Cancel the regular season and have the Spurs and Cass play for the title starting on Halloween.

The A's did disappoint this year. However, the Warriors are projected by the experts in Vegas to be one of the best in the league. I wouldn't write them off yet WTCG. Over/under:

    Team
    Win Total

    Cavaliers
    58.5

    Thunder
    57.5

    Spurs
    56.5

    Bulls
    55.5

    Clippers
    55.5

    Warriors
    50.5

A's Mark Thompson stated, the A's were shopping for lobster on a canned tuna budget. When you attempt that you leave disappointed.

Whether one, as a sports fan living in the SF Bay Area (or No. Cal. or anywhere) get enjoyment or misery out of following the sports teams in the SF Bay Area merely comes down to your point of view.

If you like following your favorite teams regardless of whether they are good or bad, you can garner enjoyment from the highs and lows, the triumphs and the tragedies.

If you (for whatever reason) simply can not stand any failure by your favorite team, then anything less than a championship year after will bring you nothing but misery [in fact if you are lucky enough to win titles year after year (i.e. De La Salle football from 1992 through 2003 and a 153 game winning streak) you may even believe that championships year after year are not enough and that each victory by your team must be a blow out].

For someone with the mindset that championships year after year is the only acceptable outcome, I can only imagine that if you are in Vegas and gamble the joy of winning is minimal, while the pain of losing is simply unbearable.

So true. Plus, the highs are so much more enjoyable when you have had some lows. As a Sacramento Kings fan for 20 years we had a few really good seasons. The first couple "good" seasons involved first round playoff losses (late 1990's). When we finally won a series it was an epic moment. It was huge. They didn't win a championship but they were in the mix for a few years and it really was exciting times in this small town. The highs and lows of life.

The Sacramento Kings, IMO, got a raw deal from the refs in game 7 against the Lakers years ago.

Watch the game on video today and it still is readily apparent that someone wanted the Lakers to advance to the next round and not the Kings.

Depends on where in Oakland you live. A large chunk of the city that is true but there are actually some spectacular parts of Oakland. Good or bad part of town if you own a house your home value has increased by about 30 percent this year.

    WTCG is correct.

Some parts of Oakland are extremely nice. Other parts are not. A friend of mine and his wife live in Oakland in the area just south of the Montclair District. A very nice neighborhood. He tells me though that at night (and sometimes during the day) when all is quiet in his neighborhood and when he has his windows open he can hear gunfire coming from the not so nice neighborhoods in Oakland.

Same thing with other communities in the SF Bay Area that have a negative reputation. Great neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, some right next to each other; and some with the boundary between the two shifting constantly.

  • PSASAPPSASAP Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭
Oakland is a city on the rise. People who are being priced out of SF are coming to the city and improving neighborhoods by fixing up old homes and starting new businesses downtown and in small neighborhoods. The weather there is never too hot or too cold and the diversity in cuisine is one of the reasons to visit. Gentrification has been underway since the early 2000's, and the area surrounding the Coliseum, traditionally one of the unsafe areas, has gotten better. There still is a crime problem, but how many major cities have eradicated criminal activity?

I've been very blessed. I'm a Michigan sports fan and I've been lucky enough to see national/world championships for my teams in:

    baseball - Tigers '84
    hockey - Red Wings '97, '98, 2002, 2008
    basketball - Pistons '89, '90, 2004
    college football - Michigan '97
college hockey - Lake Superior State (multiple)
pro football - Michigan Panthers '83 (hey, I'll take what I can get)
    college basketball - Michigan '89

And, if you count my new local football team (the Seahawks), I've gotten an NFL title, too. Hard not to be a Seahawks fan here in Spokane image

Lol. People still call sports radio about the 2002 series against the Lakers. Tough way to lose for sure. Hopefully one day they can rebuild a team remotely close to that good. Although I think we are becoming a soccer town and I anticipate us getting an MLS town. I predict it will be popular like Seattle and Portland.

In a ballpark that the Giants have never had great success in they got the big fly they needed to get excited. Unlike the A's they never let off the gas. It was a great win, nearly flawless all around.

Now let's keep the momentum going because they're headed straight into another ballpark they have never been good in.

    WTCG is feeling better today.

Impressive pitching performance for sure. I really like this wild card format though. It does penalize the teams as they have to burn a good pitcher heading into the 5 game series. It's really a good set up. Better than the former set up with one wild card team.

I disagree with this. All the divisions and wild cards........is all about money. You can squeak in and get hot and win something that you shouldn't even be in.

Remember when there were 2 leagues and at the end of the year the top team from each league played in the WS?

That was a true champion....not like now at all.

I hear ya. I grew up in the 70's when it was 4 teams so I am not quite as old as you. image

I loved that and felt it was generally a pretty good selection of the best team. However, I like that so many teams have relevant games late in the season... down to the last day. To me that's more interesting. I agree not a true champion in the old school way but it makes for a more interesting sport overall.

With yesterday's win the Giants only need to win two more post season series (NLCS and World Series) to satisfy SF Bay Area sports fans and be considered to have had a successful season.

Not winning both series and not winning its 3rd title in 5 seasons is simply unacceptableimage

At least WTCG. I don't think most Bay Area fans are quite so unrealistic.

The sentiment in the area amongst Bay Area sports fans is basically thank God for the Giants. Without the Giants the Northern California sports scene has been waves of big disappointments sprinkled in with moments of falling just short one time after another.

We'll start with the positive. Giants beat the Nationals in the NLDS to advance to the NLCS. A win is a win and the Giants did just that, with the help of good pitching and luck. The Nationals are the MLB version of the San Jose Sharks: great in the regular season only to torpedo themselves come postseason time. The RISP hitting could be better as the team collectively went around 2 for 22 with RISP. That needs improvement. Of the 3 runs they scored in the decider of the NLDS one run came on a fielder's choice, one was walked in and one was scored on a passed ball. Although an NLCS series against the Dodgers would have been entertaining, I like their matchup against the Cardinals more. The Giants won the season series against the Cards while against the Dodgers they were completely hapless against Kershaw and Grienke. Against a hypothetical series against the Dodgers the Dodgers would have practically been guaranteed two games won.

A's and Angels are spending quality time together watching the ALCS from the comfort of sitting in front of the television. Wouldn't surprise me if half the A's roster is traded and sold for minor league and scrub parts before the start of spring training.

The NHL season kicks off tonight and the San Jose Sharks start the season against the Stanley Cup champions. So what'll it be this season...1st round or 2nd round?

Raiders had a bye week last weekend but some how, some way, they found a way to lose. Final score: Bye Week 38, Raiders 9. There is local buzz about the possibility of Mike Holmgren being interested in the head coach vacancy. No credible coach in his right mind would come within 10 miles of Raiders headquarters much less take that job. It's no surprise Mike Shanahan and Jon Gruden won't answer calls from any numbers with a 510 area code.

They weren't pretty but 49ers win two games in a row at home. The defense looks adequate for what they have but the offense still stinks especially in the Red Zone. The schedule doesn't get any easier and opposing defenses are always getting better.

I have lived in Nor Cal since 1986. The first 5 years in the Bay Area. I think you are way off base. I think the sentiments you speak of are YOURS but not the majority of fans. I have never felt the people of the Bay expect championships. I think you are way off base. If anything I would say they appreciate their championships they do get.

    Gastronome.

My "I you are not first, you are last" post was tongue in cheek", merely to mimick the sentiment of the OP.

I actually think that No. Cal. sports teams, both pro, college and high school have been very entertaining and enjoyable for their fans. Even if the teams do not win a title every year.

The emotional component of being a sports fan can, depending on your mindset and point of view, can be satisfying and can contribute to a fan's overall happiness in life even if "your team" fails to be #1. The highs and lows of sports competition, the victories and the defeats collectively contribute to what it is that fans want and need.

As for my favorite team, I am disappointed that Denver lost the Super Bowl last February (and that they lost is such a terrible fashion, which they have done 5 out of 7 trips to the title game). However, Denver had a great season last year and provided benefit and joy to this fan of the team. It looks like Denver will have another good year in 2014. Whether Denver gets back to and wins the Superbowl in 2015 I have no idea. Fun to go along for the ride however.

Go Denver, beat the 49rs, tomorrow.
  • SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,119 ✭✭✭✭✭
So far Denver is putting a beat down on the 49rs. SF threw a pick and Manning just threw TD#4. Denver offense is potent again and it's defense is much better this year. I guess the SF Bay area melt down continues. He Denver.
  • WTCGWTCG Posts: 8,940 ✭✭✭
Giants win the pennant. Good thing the Giants are still around to keep the attention off the wannabe, exposed weak ass team that is the 49ers. Unfortunately the Giants will need to win four more games in the next seven games or they'll end the season with nothing.

As for the 49ers, now the entire country has witnessed the pretenders they truly are. Barely squeeze by a 1-5 team, get completely massacred by a good team. If they walk off the field now and forfeit the game maybe they'll hang on to whatever ounce of dignity they have left. Walk home from Denver and don't give up another 8 TD passes along the way.

Completely expected. The march to 4-12 or 5-11 continues.

Now the entire country gets the opportunity to witness how overrated this team is. Keep painting a turd gold and calling it a gold nugget doesn't make it a gold nugget. Jesus Christ this is an embarassment.
