clad 5 star generals half dollar

Greetings, it has been a long time since I have been here.
Can some one explain why a pcgs graded clad 5 star generals half dollar direct from the mint in MS70 is worth so much more than the same coin from the 5 star generals profile set? Does the set coin have a different finish or something??

PCGS MS70 is a "Perfect" grade. That costs money.

Find a "Perfect" coin and submit it yourself and you can save some money. Most coins will not grade PCGS MS70.

They have only made three Arnold-Bradly MS70's none of mine I'm sorry to say. Of the MS69's there are 832. Now which do you think is worth more.image
  • Well, I have submitted 3 of the Arnold-Bradley half dollars to PCGS and got 1 MS69 and 2 MS70. These I purchased from the mint as stand alone coins. It is on the PCGS price guide where I see the huge gap for the 5 star generals half from the Profile Set

See what you mean but I don't remember there being any difference in the coins issued from the mint. Only saw the three I got as First strikes. And did not get any of the Profile sets back then.

BTW welcome to the boards. And great going on that submission.

This question is more complicated than I 1st thought,,,,

In checking PCGS POPS in MS70 there are (3) coin numbers for this coin.

#517647 is regular label 107 pcs PCGS MS70
    #517648 is 1st Strike Label 3 pcs PCGS MS70
#530340 is identified with "Profile Collection" and has 14 pcs PCGS MS70

I believe the coins are all the same finish but PCGS used a special label for "Profile Collection" coins?

You said "stand alone coins" so I am guessing regular label coins not "Profile Collection" Coins or label?

If "Profile Collection" did you send to PCGS in Mint Packaging? Did they charge extra for this label?

Which coin number is on your label?

I am confused. I just checked "Coin Facts" and it says that PCGS has graded 107 of those coins in MS-70.

There are three First Strike MS70s. The other 104 are either profile set labels or the standard label.
  • The 3 I sent in were just standard MS order coins from the mint. I didn't act quick enough to get the Ist strike label, and they are not a part of the Profile Set. I was just wondering why, when you look at the PCGS price guide the Profile Set coins in MS70 are valued so much less.
I still don't really get why.

Tokenandcoin. The Profile coins are valued higher than the blue label coins as they should be. Blue labels at $2,150 last time I looked and Profile coins at $4,000 in the 70 grade. If memory serves me right, there were less than 11,000 or so profile sets sold before the Mint cut them off. At this point, there are only 14 profile coins in MS70. I believe (but am not 100% certain) that the blue label pop also includes both the First Strike and Profile pops in the number.

  • Wondercoin, you are right, some how I misread the values on the profile set. This could change my thinking. I have 2 sets and I think now with a value of $4,000.00 for the MS70, I may reconsider and send them in for grading by PCGS.It now makes more sense to me.
Thanks for setting me straight on this.

Tokenandcoin. No problem. And, remember, the Price Guide is just that... A guide. I personally believe the price on the blue label is no longer even close to $2,150. There are coins (not selling) on ebay for 20% to 30% below that level right now I believe. I also know where you can obtain a GP coin for back of full guide as well. Good luck with your pursuits!! • wondercoin, what do you mean by "..can obtain a GP coin for back of full grade as well "??
And yes, I see the coins are selling for less, nevertheless it is tempting.

My POP figures were from a quick scan of my set so it ended up being the First Strike numbers as mine are those.image

I said full guide, not full grade. That is, a General Profile coin for something less than $4,000 as well.

  • wonder coin, thanks.
I see the $1.00 from the profile set is also up considerably, per the Price Guide.

    Perhaps I missed something,
can someone explain the differences being discussed with the "Profiles set" coins versus the others?

As far as I know it's the same coin another case of buying labels.
  • Greetings, on the PCGS Price Guide, look-up the 2013 MS clad half dollar, under commemoratives. Click on the far left + sign and it will bring up 3 types, regular mint issue. Those designated Ist strike, which were regular issue Comm. coins, and Profile collector's set.All 3 have diff. values. These values are high end retail, in most cases and won't be reflected in Ebay prices. Of course the high value is shown for the MS70 grade
Now do the same with 2013 MS dollar, The profile set again leads the group of 2 types in this series.
I would guess that is why the Profile sest are now selling on Ebay for $165.00+Buyers are hoping to get a set or 2 and send the coins in to get them graded, hoping to get an MS70 grade.

So its physically impossible to remove the coins from the holders in the profiles set. I would think the only way to get the profiles label is if it was in an unopened sealed mint box.

More labels madness over a base metal [IMO] piece of junk memorializing the military industrial complex. Also, kind of like honoring the North's generals from the Civil War but leaving out Sherman. Let's not mention the uninspired artwork - if you can even call it that - going into this piece.
