France is a civil code country and criminal prosecutions carry a presumption of guilt, rather than a presumption of innocence. Not sure what their sentences look like.

The penalties in their system cannot be too bad based on this comment -

and if he used attempted murder vis-à-vis this crime (vic and cops), the person probably used it before as well making this even more concerning that the person was free.

i've come to realize in the past few years just how bad shootouts actually are, especially if FMJs are being used, let alone attack rifles.

(the article states "he", so i used that pronoun) from what i've read, the genres for crimes committed are becoming less and less separated by %. some great info out there analyzing these numbers/%.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

A lot of countries have revolving door justice systems for career criminals because
it makes plenty of work for lawyers and judges and constitutes a great excuse for
removing "Liberte" from the "Fraternite'" and assuring "E'galite'," is meted out on an
    "as needed" basis.

Amateur criminals and aspiring ones tend to get very long sentences.

Yeah, was there last week and cannot imagine the chaos of a police chase in a crowded Metro station with lots of tourists.
I hadn't been to Paris in 31 years but still love it however.
Was spending too much money other ways to even think about searching out for a coin shop.

Somewhat surprised that the police weren't on strike like every other public group during the nice summer months.

Living in Europe now, I can say that the Italians are the worst in August, other countries it is July. In Italy the whole place just shuts down.

This past month in Paris I can recall the following strikes... taxi drivers, rail operators, air traffic controllers.

I think he meant "assault style rifle". I'm guessing he doesn't know much about guns---sort of like the politicians that make our gun laws.

Train station shootout? They're pretty fortunate nobody else got hurt. Too bad there weren't any non-criminals carrying that could have held him at the shop while the police were on their way.

I think attempting an armed robbery in Paris is nothing short of insane. Throughout the city are stationed special forces types with fully automatic weapons. They are constantly on the alert for terrorist activity.
