<< <i>Nice collection. Do you have a 1930 Coletta Fred Perry. I just bought one that was sold as 1932 but it was number 16 which is the same number as the 1930 one.. Wasn't sure if was an error in the listing or not so took a chance it's s tough card to find [/IMG] >>

Yes, that is a 1930, not a 1932. Anders frequently lists his items that way though.

  • miwlvrnmiwlvrn Posts: 4,264 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wanted to add that the bios on the back of the 1930 Cloetta "Ross" cards have less text and information than the ones from the other 1930 Cloetta matte set.

<< <i>Since he came up, Fred Perry one of the greats from the 30's was featured on lots of cards. I think there's some debate on his rookie. I believe there's only one Cloetta set, but PSA has a 1930 and 1932 set? If anyone has clarity on this it would be great. If the Cloetta's are from 1930 then that would be his rookie, if not his 1931 Churchman's card would be his rookie. >>

1930 is correct. 1932 is a mech. error.

There are several athletes who appear in both of the 1930 Cloetta sports sets, but the majority are in either one or the other.

Also note, there is a 1930 Cloetta Film Stars set which is separate from the sports ones, with a different checklist and different design on back.

I had a tennis card pop in an order tonight. Would you consider this his RC?

Oops, guess not. There is the 1924 Willard and 1925 Bunson.

<< <i>Tilden also has a 1921 W551 strip card and a 1922 Felix Potin card. Have a scan of the strip card in the front page of my thread. It's not a tough card to find. The greiling sounds interesting though, would love to see a scan when you get it back. >>

Here you go: (I have both of the graded ones, a 3 and a 2)

I picked up a 76 Connors. I over paid but figured if I get one raw and by the time I pay to get it graded ect... It wasn't that bad. Looking forward to getting it in hand. Thanks for all the info in this thread. I also just sent the 1980 Mcenroe to BGS. Hopefully psa will decide to grade that set after its catalogued by Beckett.

Great card! I only paid about 10% of the price for mine, but they're lower grade - probably 4ish on the PSA scale. I think a nicer condition one like yours was probably priced about right.

    Enjoy!
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭
I was thinking its Prob only worth about 15 but then another 15 to get it graded brings me up to 30.. Plus I do t know when a raw one would come up for auction.. So figured it was worth the extra 20 bucks to just get it now.

I got these graded by BGS. Hopefully I can cross them to PSA at some point. I like the McEnroe to use as his rookie. The grades stink but I'm just happy to get them in slabs. I think they present much better than 1.5. I'll post scans when I get them back.

I'm not even a tennis fan but I'm really impressed with this collection. Tracking down some of these alone is impressive.. Getting them all signed is awesome

doesn't look like a very good box. John Isner is the top ranked american on the tour right now but he's only around top 20. He's super tall and has a good serve, but I don't think anyone expects him to win a major. His signed rookies can be had for about 5-10 bucks (you don't have a signed rookie there). Hopefully you didn't pay too much for the box.

Is this Jimmy Connors? It looks like John Newcombe?

Anyone? There is no way this is Jimmy Connors because Connors played left handed. PSA mistake?

Update, no one is responding which means I am correct. PSA made a mistake. The player is John Newcombe, NOT Jimmy Connors.

I'm interested to know about the Connors too. I would be pretty annoyed if it's mislabeled by PSA since I just sold my Connors psnini card because I thought I had an earlier card of him.

It might not be his true rookie card, but I think both the 82 Connors and 82 McEnroe Panini's are great cards to own, being it was their first Panini's.

I picked the panini cards over the sports casters but since the Nabisco fit in a standard slab and was so much earlier I went with it. Is it possible it's a reverse negative?

That's frustrating about the Nabisco card. Luckily I have a 1980 Deportas. I like the KP card. I never heard of it before and couldn't find any information on them. Who knows if it's really from 1978. The card looks good though

Good detective work on the Newcombe, Alex.

After doing more research on the 1976 Nabisco set, I found out there IS actually a Jimmy Connors card in the set. But its not the #3 card(Newcombe). Its card #10. It has a picture of Jimmy Connors playing doubles with Ilie Nastase, and also has Connors and Nastase listed on the back of the card as U.S. OPEN doubles champions. Strange enough, I found a picture of this #10 card GRADED BY PSA. The PSA label says 'Jimmy Connors. So therefore, it still looks like the 1976 Nabisco set has his true rookie. Its just not the John Newcombe card lol.
Here is a picture of the PSA graded #10 card. Connors picture is the bottom, and Nastase on the top of card.

Just curious, are you contacting PSA about your mislabeled graded Newcombe card? I'm curious to know what they say.
