If I listed a coin on ebay and missed something on a "Buy it Now" listing at my full price....oh well to bad for me. Good for the person who spotted something I might have known nothing about. Ive bought coins for extremely cheap and flipped for thousands profit. I bought it at the dealers full asking price....am I a bad guy? If your selling something you should atleast try to learn about it.
If someone lists something as a BIN thats what they want for it.....thats what its worth to them.
I guess it is. We all like to buy coins under their value. But I seem to remember a few days ago the rants against those who bid on silver eagles for $5 and $10 each. Those who bid on them and those who thought it was o.k. to bid on them were labeled as unethical scammers. This is a little different. In that case a multi-million dollar corporation was losing a few dollars because they listed them for less than their true value. In this case some guy who is trying to make a few bucks selling $20 and $30 Morgan and Peace dollars and a Trade Dollar that he mislabeled as an 1877-S, when in fact it was a much rarer 1877-CC. Stupidity on the seller's fault for which he paid a $2,000 price (your estimate). Then again, he may not have anticipated running into someone who may know more about Trade Dollars than any one else on the planet. On second thought, I guess the guy got what he deserved. And apparently you ripped him a good one. Nothing wrong with that. Keep on rippin' I say.
Many rants against brick and mortar shops too. How they rip the unsuspecting for a living. A particular rant comes to mind. Someone proposed to a B&M (here on the board), "So, what would you do if someone came into your shop and laid down a $2,000 gold coin and said, 'I want $500 for it', would you just take it?" I guess they thought the worst, most dishonorable thing the dealer could do would be to accept someone's foolish offer when they simply know more than the seller. But I guess you are a partner in a coin company aren't you? And you are very knowledgeable about the Trade Dollars. But I still think what you did was o.k.
No one on this board has been more misaligned for his posts about coin purchases than keets. I've seen him practically lynched for nothing more than telling some interesting stories and sharing some fabulous coins. But, I can only image the flack he would get if he had a similar rip. Even if it was just an eBay rip identical to this one. He just doesn't have the same adoring fans I guess.
If this is all good, and I guess it is from all I've read in the other posts, then I just want to apologize to all the B&M's who have been slammed for buying low and selling high. I have never posted anything about you, but I do believe you deserve an apology.
And keets, I want to apologize to you also. Although I have never posted anything about you and I have always enjoyed reading your stories, you have my apology on behalf of all those who did post and who assumed evil intent in everything you shared. And don't stop with the posts. I, for one, look forward to reading them.
But most of all I want to apologize to TDN. If anything I have written sounds like a criticism, it wasn't meant to be. I am sure most of us would have done the same, at least all those fawning in deepest admiration in the preceding posts. In any case, I believe you will appreciate the coin or the money more than the seller would have. You sound like a great business man and if you keep this up, you may be rich some day.
So, best wishes and as Connecticoin said in an earlier post-
You Suck! >>
Very interesting take on the hypocrisy of the coin forum. Well said. Perfect examples of the difficulty in determining ethics. One person sees it as o.k. Another person sees it as ethically wrong. That's what makes the forum and life so interesting but also so toxic at times.
I am the seller on ebay who made the stupid mistake of listing this coin for too low a price. I'm not a coin collector and didn't know how to do the "due diligence" to find the true value of the coin. I just checked a few listings on ebay to see what they were selling for and went from there. I know better now.
I harbor no ill will toward TDN, whatsoever. He was offered a great price on something he wanted and he took it.
I appreciate the other people here who let me know how bad I screwed up so I can learn from this experience and so I can try to avoid such blunders in the future. Lesson learned.

Hey stbayer welcome to the forum, I am glad that you are taking an active interest in learning about coins. I have been taking some flack for talking to you as you can see but don't let that bother you. TDN is one of the best people to ask in the community about trade dollars and I am sure he would answer your questions if asked. I am not sure who first alerted you to this thread but it is good you got to read it as you have learned a lot already. I glad we talked and that I could help you out with some information. As I told you on ebay just ask and the same goes here and don't forget to post some pics of the coins. Even though you can see that Crypto and I do not always see eye to eye and that he jumps a bit before looking he has a lot of good knowledge but is a bit gruff. As a new member it may seem a bit ruff at first but stick to it as the best in the world are here to help and discuss coins. Again welcome to the board and may your spark for coins never go out.

You might want to consider running a true auction next time you find yourself with an item you don't know the value of. If you don't know the territory, even trying to do price comparisons to "similar" items can lead to significant miscalculations.
Thank you, CoinJunkie, I'll try that on my next couple of listings. I appreciate all the good help people have been giving me.
On a new matter, I came across a roll of 40 quarters, 1964-D. They are in a clear plastic tube and they were labeled UNC. They are so beautiful they look like they've been there ever since they were minted. So I took 2 out of the middle and sent them to PCGS for grading. I didn't send them all because it looks like the price difference between a 66 and a 67 can make or break you. If they in the 67 category, they may be worth over $1,000 each. If not, though, I'd lose money on selling them after paying for grading. Is my line of thinking correct?
Stbayer you would want to start a new thread about these quarters listing the date and mint along with your question. If possible posting a pic of the obverse and reverse of the coin would be helpful. You can use a service like photobucket to upload your pics to your thread. Recent MS66 auction prices have ranged from $55.00 to 195.00 for a nicely toned coin. Toning on a coin that is natural and colorful can cad a substantial premium to a coin as well as amazing eye appeal.this coin an NGC MS77 star toned ( link) sold for over $2000.00 but most MS67 have been going below 700.00. More importantly you need to look and see if you have a 1964-D Type C Rev FS-901 as this coin in a MS66 or higher can be worth over $2000.00 or more! Also look for doubled dies obverse and reverse and repunched mint marks as they also add value. This is why a new thread with pics would be advised especially if you have a roll of 1964-D Type C Rev FS-901! I hope this helps oh if you do have these "error" coins you have to ask for them to be attributed when you send them in for grading.

Your line of thinking was never incorrect. Welcome aboard. "Due diligence" pays as much as persistence and patience. And none of it comes "overnight". I make bigger mistakes than almost everyone. Most people don't admit their mistakes, rather defend their wayward position. And it's nice that "new people" step up to the plate to represent themselves. Don't feel too bad about the loss ( not achieving maximum) when you have a great "GAIN" (experience and introductions ), it's better than any loss, coming here. It's a WIN/WIN.
Grading is a slippery slope, too. Best of luck and I'm glad you're here.
I have read all of this and it really does not surprise me that some forum members have located and talked to the seller that got ripped. I have had better rips as you call it but I will never post them for fear some might call the guy that sold the real estate, the car dealer, the plumber, the renter etc.

I agree with this, but it's a select few (or in this case, one) that are like a bunch of old ladies, not all inclusive (actually, this WAS all started by ONE 'old lady', or as LogPotato says, ONE "jealous keyboard commando'. That hits the nail on the head, and that's what has fueled the fire in this thread, the actions of a certain member.

<< <i>So cherrypicking is now wrong? >>
Congrats TDN on the Cherrypick, Its really sad to me that in the old days folks always loved a cherrypick. I will no Longer Post Any purchases from Ebay or Elsewhere as there are some on these boards who FEEL the need to contact sellers.
Any one that Starts a Thread about a Cherrypick on Ebay now has to worry that certain members think its okay to contact the sellers because they read the thread. Sorry to say I do not think thats right and it has taken the fun out of collecting and sharing info on these boards. Enjoy >>
It DOES look like cherrypicking is a bad thing, when you have a member who runs to a seller to tattle.
I can't agree more with you, Tom. I'll, also, now not discuss anything in the form of a rip again, in the public forum (only to those I trust in PM's from now on)...and like Tom says, this DOES take A LOT of fun out of 'the hunt', and share their relishing in the successes of it, due to this happening. I was originally going to post an 'attaboy' on the rip, as that USED to be a cool thing to do, and though some were naturally jealous, the person getting the 'rip' was lauded and given the 'you suck' award.....people used to ASK if they deserved a 'you suck', it was held in such high regards to get one. Now, due to a 'sour grapes' tattletale, that actually runs to a SELLER (I STILL can't believe this could happen) to let them know they got 'taken', it puts the kibosh (sic?) on trying to earn a 'you suck', or presenting to other members their conquest. Any adult that goes and 'tattles' on another, certainly does not have my respect, it's what CHILDREN do when they get mad. And, in my experience, one who does this is usually no longer allowed to sit at the cool kids table. Looks like there's a new seat open at the cool kids table (though, I'm not sure he was invited to sit there in the first place).
I also don't understand how this person can just move forward and act like he did nothing wrong, when, IMO, he did (he stirs the pot as he did, then edits posts.... shows that just MAYBE he knows he crossed the line, but isn't gentleman enough to apologize for starting this whole thing). If this person felt that strongly, it could have been handled in a different manner, and not bring the seller into the mix HERE, because of a 'rip'. Yes, inform him of what he did wrong, advise him of how to handle FUTURE listings, and invite him here to learn how not to make the same mistake (isn't that how we learn???), but not under the guise of his being taken. It shows how he wound up here in his first post, especially, by his own admission, that he didn't do ALL his homework, and that he is NOT upset that he left money on the table. I can only imagine what was said to get him here...I'm sure it was NOT a flattering reflection on TDN. Maybe, in the future, this member can spend less time here and peruse ebay so there ARE no more rips, and he can take it upon himself to be a REAL ebay policeman, and feel good about it. There's always one........
That's a nice post, there ^ Next best thing is a "You Suck" And a new member arriving (though I can't take credit), is among us. Stbayer and TDN are now indelibly tied together. Who can change that ? That coin now has one heck of a provenance.
Way back on page two I suggested that this transaction should probably be something a Dealer might want to not boast about. My thinking was that typically Dealers need to buy low and sell high, everyone knows that, however, openly declaring you paid $50 for a coin actually valued (by you) at $2,000 is just bad form.
I suggested also that in my opinion the right thing to do is send it back and explain to the Seller where he made his mistake.
Maybe I'm just being too lofty in my expectations but I don't think any of that is out of line. My position isn't framed by jealousy or dislike, I'm not opposed to a cherry pick or using your experience to your benefit. Every one of us want's a good deal and an occasional bargain. That's one of the great thrills a collector can experience. Where this post failed in my eyes was in the total disregard for the Seller by the OP and subsequent posters. It took no effort at all to conclude that his pictures were basic, his feedback indicated his novice status and (as was stated early on) it looked for all the world like a family member was selling off a collection he/she had little knowledge about.
Then someone notified the Seller of the error and offers to mentor him in future listings and that person is deemed to have done something wrong? Seriously?
For some it appears the hobby has stopped being about coins and instead is only about money.
If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

BINGO! We have a winner!
Edited to ask....has it been established that the 'mentor' is really mentor worthy??? If TDN was the mentor, that's one thing, but a 'snitch' is not, IMO, mentor-worthy.
I suggested also that in my opinion the right thing to do is send it back and explain to the Seller where he made his mistake.

eBay is about finding bargains, or things others don't want but you do, and maybe you would have paid more but didn't have to. I hate to use the word, but your statement is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. I have heard dumber things, and certainly have said dumber things, but it's been a while.

For you Crypto this is my email communication with the seller being that you incorrectly blamed me for telling him about this post and giving him a link to it.
Yes, apparently other people on the blog were very upset that the coins dealer screwed me so bad and they wanted me to see the blog.

Dear craigstbay, again feel free to ask me questions. I take it some one gave you a link to the thread about the trade dollar?
As you can see I did not provide him the link so I would appreciate not being your scape goat. If anyone else has questions I will answer them, I even extolled TDNs merits as one of if not the best Trade dollar specialist.
Words have weight and meaning please do not accuse me of things I did not do as I will gladly own up to anything I have done, Thank you for your understanding.

So you'd prefer to let the seller remain in ignorance so millionaire coin collectors can continue to fatten up off of him?
Once the OP posted the purchase publicly, any subsequent communication was fair game and beyond criticism, IMNSHO.

If the seller does not know what something is worth, he should not be pricing it. The 99 cent auction is a great friend and protector of the foolish. >>
I made the same point earlier in the thread. What I'm saying is that there's no shame in somebody from the boards contacting the seller about the situation so that he might learn from his mistake.

Your logic rings in the same way as a famous person once declared it takes a village to raise a child. So perhaps you think it takes a "community to own a coin? Coin collecting is and always has been an individual pursuit, and to my knowledge "communities" do not collect coins. The term coin collector is synonymous with coin hunter. This is not about the money, hopefully it is about the coins. So "What difference does this really make?"
TDN is a member of this forum that is widely respected as a very knowledgable collector of coins and on this forum has been very gracious to share his knowledge. It has only been speculated that the coin in question "might" be worth as much as $2000. At auction it may have only been worth $1000 if that. This is not exactly like TDN ripped a 1913 Liberty nickel for $50.
Perhaps eBay should have some culpability this issue as well, by your train of logic? Or, because eBay does not have numismatic experts on staff they are absolved of all issues. A recent thread regarding a 1856 FE cent was interpreted by certain members of this forum as being negligence on the part of the auction house. If you are inclined to think this way, then you should also be able to lay more blame with the auction house than you do the buyer.
I wonder the outrage if this coin had been listed as "buy from owner" at $50 on Heritage...........
Rule 8) This forum is provided for the education and sharing of information. Not as a personal soapbox. If you want to learn and share information about US Coins you are welcome.
This rule seems to have been forgotten or overlooked by many and remembered by few. If any one on this board needed help I would help them in any way I could no matter the issue as that is just how I am, always have been and always will be. I pull people out of ditches all the time with my truck during winter and never have asked for money or accepted it when offered as I believe help should be freely given when needed. I am sorry this is contrary to so many on the board. To me this is a coin collecting community and if you are a solitary collector why would you be here, why would you show off your coins, why would you ask questions, why would you answer questions as you are a solitary collector. I removed 2 posts from this thread after comments from a member angered me as I do not like being blamed for something I did not do and I went on a rant but I read this rule and was reminded this is not a place to stand on a soap box and yell, that is that. Thank you all for your understanding and Thank you Especially Trade Dollar Nut for your understanding it has been most welcome.
There really is no way for a novice to know what a chopmarked coin is worth. You can't go by mintmark as some Philly mint coins are worth more than some CC mint coins. You can't go by the surfaces as most consider them damaged. The rabid collectors pretty much determine the market on them.
I, as a rabid collector, will be happy to let anyone who has a nice choppy know my opinion of its value - just PM me.

This just makes me sad. Sad that I didn't get the rip, sad that the guy got ripped, sad that the ripper got told on, sad that the rippee is being so nice about it.
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Or it could mean you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that ---- ain't the truth. The truth is, you're the weak, and I am the tyranny of evil men. But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd."
A couple of years even before joining, I found this place to be the gathering ground of the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.
There was a lot of trash talk and "me over you" thinking and acting.
The place has evolved.
But rat and tattle-tale are troubling.
One does not need to be religious to believe that those who offer caring and assistance are doing something that needs to be done more.
What ever happened to furthering the hobby? helping the newbs? Are those of you out there looking to provide the "education" to the newcomer a la the "what do you call a newb who's not a YN" thread? I was just joking about providing the "education." I hope those using "rat" and "tattle tale" can see the mismatch.
Of course, for those so impassioned(?), I guess some of the "rat" or "tattle tale" those doing the "telling" might be backed by residual heat from past threads?
I don't know... I don't want to deny anyone their ebay "you suck" purchase, but do have half a feeling that a monetary "catch and release" might silence them (this once(?)) with the acknowledgement towards those so impassioned that further rips will likely be underground if the court of public opinion rides on towards monetary martyrdom for TDN, LS and Legend. Realistically, this is for those who are on that bandwagon, if TDN, LS and Legend cannot win with you (outside of ultimately being perfect) then what do they have to lose by ignoring you? Further, you're doing a bad job of walling them in with their posts and writings.
Yah, I highly doubt it was him. For the record, someone has PMd me about their new ebay rip and stated that they won't post it because of this thread. So much for one of the fun things on this forum...

Good for you. I feel exactly the same way. I've been cherry picked and I felt and still feel no ill feelings: they knew something I did not and they deserved the bounty. As to being naive or worse, you can't know everything - even though some here think that they do.

I harbor no ill will toward TDN, whatsoever. He was offered a great price on something he wanted and he took it.
I appreciate the other people here who let me know how bad I screwed up so I can learn from this experience and so I can try to avoid such blunders in the future. Lesson learned.
<< <i>I am the seller on ebay who made the stupid mistake of listing this coin for too low a price. I'm not a coin collector and didn't know how to do the "due diligence" to find the true value of the coin. I just checked a few listings on ebay to see what they were selling for and went from there. I know better now.

You might want to consider running a true auction next time you find yourself with an item you don't
know the value of. If you don't know the territory, even trying to do price comparisons to "similar" items
can lead to significant miscalculations.
<< <i>Thank you, CoinJunkie, I'll try that on my next couple of listings. I appreciate all the good help people have been giving me.

RIP "BEAR"
Like a bunch of little old ladies here. Run to eBay and tell the dude he got ripped off.
I am not sure what to believe in this thread, but some of it I don't, for certain.

<< <i>
<< <i>So cherrypicking is now wrong?
Congrats TDN on the Cherrypick, Its really sad to me that in the old days folks always loved a cherrypick. I will no Longer Post Any purchases from Ebay or Elsewhere as there are some on these boards who FEEL the need to contact sellers.
Any one that Starts a Thread about a Cherrypick on Ebay now has to worry that certain members think its okay to contact the sellers because they read the thread. Sorry to say I do not think thats right and it has taken the fun out of collecting and sharing info on these boards. Enjoy

Good grief, we are not all jammed into a tree house where one kid rats on the other for smoking a cigarette.
This is the world wide web and we act like it is the back room of a coin club.
Of course someone is going to notify the seller of the rip. All it takes is a couple of clicks and a short message.
Would be nice if we could keep our business between the trusted members of the forum. The fact is, the forum is the world.
It was a good rip and worthy of praise.
Lesson is, treat the web as you would a megaphone on a busy street corner and multiply that by a million!

Agree.
<< <i>Top notch seller and buyer

BINGO! We have a winner!
Edited to ask....has it been established that the 'mentor' is really mentor worthy??? If TDN was the mentor, that's one thing, but a 'snitch' is not, IMO, mentor-worthy.

eBay is about finding bargains, or things others don't want but you do, and maybe you would have paid more but didn't have to. I hate to use the word, but your statement is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. I have heard dumber things, and certainly have said dumber things, but it's been a while.

Then what does that make the VA health care scandal whistleblower, who I am sure felt was dealing in a righteous manner-the proper care for our returning soldiers.

Yes, apparently other people on the blog were very upset that the coins dealer screwed me so bad and they wanted me to see the blog.

Dear craigstbay,
again feel free to ask me questions.

What I'm saying is that there's no shame in somebody from the
boards contacting the seller about the situation so that he might learn from his mistake.

OINK
I, for one, applaud you for your find.
To the others, just sour grapes.
If cherrypicking is bad, then why do they publish books on it?
I have cherries quite a few items. Should I return the 5 or 6 1864 L Indians that were listed & priced as regular 1864's?
Or how about the 1942/1 D Merc that I got from junk silver? Now in an NGC XF-45 holder, that 4 dealers told me was just a regular coin.
Or numerous other picks?
Nah.
Congrats on a great find.
All that this thread does is discourage others from posting great finds and letting us drool over them.
Good luck.

There were several people who told me about this forum.
As the "stupid seller" in this case, I'm just viewing the whole affair as a learning experience. Plain and simple.
I, as a rabid collector, will be happy to let anyone who has a nice choppy know my opinion of its value - just PM me.
<< <i>There really is no way for a novice to know what a chopmarked coin is worth. You can't go by mintmark as some Philly mint coins are worth more than some CC mint coins. You can't go by the surfaces as most consider them damaged. The rabid collectors pretty much determine the market on them.

Re: the rip. Nothing gangster about it
Re: rat and tattle tale:
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."
I been saying that ---- for years. And if you heard it, that meant your ---. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was some cold-blooded ---- to say to a ------------ before I popped a cap in his ---. But I saw some ---- this morning made me think twice. See, now I'm thinking, maybe it means you're the evil man, and I'm the righteous man, and Mr. 9 millimeter here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous --- in the valley of darkness.

Good for you. I feel exactly the same way. I've been cherry picked and I felt and still feel no ill feelings: they knew something I did not and they deserved the bounty. As to being naive or worse, you can't know everything - even though some here think that they do.
