Finally mine Thanks Legend
I won several lots last night in the Legend Morphy auction. None more important to me than lot #276. I have been looking
for this coin for several years after I lost out on it on Ebay. This coin belonged to Bryan Sonnier and I thought at the
time of his auction I would put a STUPID bid on it so that I COULD not lose it. Well I was out bid and tried to get in touch
with the winner to see if he wanted to make a profit on the coin. No, never going to sell I was told. Once again I was going
after this coin and was not going to lose out on it at just about any cost. To me its the nicest toned 78-cc in a GSA, soft
or hard back out there. I will say that I won the coin for much less than my max. and also for less than I offered the owner.
So I am a happy collector this am. If some one knows how to post pictures, I will email you a copy of the photo so it
can be added to this post. Or if Todd sees this post he can add the picture as he photographed it for Bryan many years ago.

My photo is much more of a representative of the actual look of the coin. My photo was taking by Todd
Blue CC photos. While the coin looks good it is not that darkly toned and has more life to it.

I can see why it didn't sell for how much you thought it would. If your image is how the coin looks, those auction pictures just cost the seller a TON of money, and saved you the same! Very nice coin by the way and congrats on finally getting this coin home!!

edited to add. i bet finding a 78-cc toned like that in a soft pack is probably pretty tough. not a fan of the condition but that toning is just yowza!

I watched several lots in the auction, but bid on none. Prices just got out of my comfort range.

If you mean grade by condition, Legend is calling the coin a 65, I looked at the coin in hand and am calling it a 64+. It will go in for grading and we will see who has it correct. Grading from pictures that are blown up always make coins look tough. I do not offer grades from photo's on these boards as, well lets just say its a guess and leave it at that. That dog has been beaten enough.

<< <i>Nice coin!!! I was pretty shocked on the lousy picture quality on the GSA CC lots, reminded me of the old Teletrade days. If someone like Todd, Lance or anyone else on the forum that knows how to use a camera would have photographed those lots, no telling what the bids would have been. That being said, it's always better when the coin in hand looks better than the picture!

Which is why I made the five hour + drive to their office, to view the lots before I bid on any of them.
It was at it turns out well worth the time investment to do so for me. I won 12 lots in total and could not be happier.
I lost out on two coins that I wanted lots 316 & 375, both of which I have better coins in higher grades. Just thought it would be cool
to own the next nicest of those graded. Both those dates are in my registry sets in my sig. line

I agree, however, I wish auction houses would put in the effort to have good coin photographers take photos.
There is a cost to it, to be sure, both in actual payment/salary and time, and I understand that. However, when dealing with lots over a certain, arbitrary amount (for me, let's say $500...or any non-average toned coin), then good photos are imperative; both to the auction house (gets the juice) and the consignor. To not do so is a large negative.
This is one of the plusses of ebay.....you can use your own photos. So, if you can't take good photos, you can have someone else do it for you and you can use theirs.
The auction photo makes the coin one I wouldn't bid on. You, as you stated, have seen the coin inhand and also saw it before on ebay, likely with a nice photo. As most people can't take the time to view coins inhand all the time, before bidding, you likely "stole" this one from what others would have strongly gone after.
Good on ya!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Congrats on your new coin.

The photos provided by the other auction houses are not much different. None provide Todd quality photos, especially on deeply toned coins.

<< <i>congrats on that coin. i would leave it in the package. but, that's just me. i am glad you finally got it. that's a great feeling. >>
I highly doubt it will come out of the package, my bet is it goes to NGC for softpack grading.

I agree. Isn't the original packaging the whole point here?...(notwithstanding the cool CC toner inside)

BTW, the coin looks like a 63 to me (lots of marks in front of the face and one on the chin.)
$4400? I didn't know that part of it. It was not highway robbery at that price! I am in the MS-63 range for grade.

No shortage of bidders on this coin, as there were several. The coin sold for pretty much the same money
several years ago on Ebay. There is a seat for every a-s in the world, and this one will sit in my collection
for quite some time. God willing.

Please pull these images out the next time someone starts a thread that says, "Wildly toned dollars didn't exist until a few years ago. People are making them all in their basements!".
This coin should immediately end that argument.

Toned GSAs such as those in the LM auction utterly destroy to oft perpetuated myth that colorful toning is strictly a new or artificial phenomena. It's too bad the images on the LM auction don't really do the coins justice, as evidenced by BluCCs photos. I picked up two of the GSAs in the LM auction, and will share my images for comparison once they arrive.
I'm not a fan.
