Bought a Columbia 1/2 turned yellow

2 weeks ago I bought a pcgs Columbia comm 1/2, white on both sides. Put it in my PCGS box and checked it today and one side has turned yellowish. WHY?

Sounds like you've got some sulfur in the atmosphere, and perhaps a slab that isn't as airtight as it should be. (Not that they're necessarily supposed to be totally airtight anyway, but some get more air than others, if you know what I mean.)

The one-sidedness is kind of strange, though. Is there any paper or tissue or cardboard in the box on that side?

Are you looking at it under a different light than the first time? Just a thought.

    Eddiego:

Bring the commem with you to the next coin club meeting and we will see if we can determine what is going on with your coin. I didn't see the coin before, but taking just two weeks to tone yellow doesn't seem right, especially on just one side.

It's in one of those pcgs blue plastic boxes that holds 20 commemoritives. Now looking at it again, it's more of a light gold color, but only on one side. I got it from D. Lawrence. it's MS65.

I don't think the box has anything to do with it

do you have a link to the item?

It sounds like the coin was dipped and not properly rinsed. If it is turning that fast it might be headed toward something much darker. The piece should not be turning this fast, although you might not have noted it when you purchased it.

There was, and probably still is, a time when "golden toning" on silver was viewed as a good thing. Quite often it is the result of dipping and re-toning.

There is an easy way at the moment to tell if it is indeed turning from an improperly rinsed dip. Is it in a new hologram holder? If not I would wager you did not notice the golden toning when you purchased it as some lighting can mask that.

When I bough it 4 weeks ago, it was white on both sides. It is in a PCGS box with 16 other commem's. I will call D. Lawrence on Monday and ask them what may have happened.

Not so much re-toning as the dipping solution left on the surfaces turning.

Also I'm shocked at the speed as 4 weeks is the most rapid I've ever heard image

I agree....heat would probably speed up the process. Years ago I was playing around using a diluted dip experimenting with copper nickel coins. If the coins were rinsed in warm-hot water they would rapidly turn golden in a day or 2 but if rinsed in cold water they would not!

    Eddiego,
You're obviously welcome to return it to us so that we can address the issue with PCGS and check the history on the coin. We'd be happy to do so! Please feel free to email me at jb@davidlawrence.com or send me a PM if you'd prefer. If it's the coin I'm thinking it was, it actually was already a golden tone on the reverse, but I want to take care of the issue for you either way!

    Thanks!

If the coin was in a recent auction, please post before-and-after photos. That would be a good starting point to figure out what happened.

I would love to do so. Even if it wasn't an auction item, we have the images available on our website, so if the buyer agrees, we'll certainly do it.
