$5 indian half eagle circ set in DANSCO

Has anyone ever put one of these together in circ condition?? This is not a high grade set, most of the coins were pulled from XF or AU detail slabs; but its just the idea of putting a set like this together, while also investing in bullion....it has been quite fun. I am missing the 2 big dogs (1909-O and 1929), but have the rest. The semi-keys (11-d and 08-s) are slabbed and velcroed to the inside of the ablum. I put "ha" under the 1929 in jest because I am quite sure it can never be attained...I'd very much like to find a low-end affordable 1909-O to add to the collection thou(please PM me if you have any leads on one for under 5k). I couldn't find an album specific for half eagles, so I bought a blank dansco album and custom pages sized for the half eagle. What are your thoughts?

I don't know much about this series, so excuse the question if it is clearly ignorant, but why are the 1908S and 1911D still in slabs? I'm guessing there are too valuable to break out, but maybe there is another reason?

It is a great looking collection.
  • csdot: Yes, the 1908-s and 1911-d are both what I consider "semi-keys" to the series....while the 1909-O and 1929 are the keys(neither of which I have, since they are both 5 figure coins in problem free AU). The 08-s and 11-d are both 4 figure or nearly so coins, so although I seriously considered breaking them out; I still have not done so. They are velcroed to the inside cover of the album, so they still clearly go with the set. :-) Thanks for asking!!

Pretty cool to see a set of these in an album, thanks for sharing image

Good luck with the 1909-O... if looking for one under $5k, will likely need to buy a "problem" coin but many of them will still look great in an album like this. I'd try to find a PCGS/NGC/ANACS certified example as well just to make sure you're buying the real deal and not a counterfeit or altered example.

thanks illini420. yeah, you're right....I will probably have to settle for a problem coin, or maybe I can get lucky on a great deal on an xf40 or lower, although rather scarce in that grade....but will definitely be sticking to the top 3 for certification. AUs are going for crazy money these days.

I like the idea of a circulate set of Indian Half Eagles. Here is my PCGS Everyman's set. I still have a very long way to go.

Unless you are an expert authenticator, you should only buy a coin from this series in a major grading service slab. This series has been very heavily counterfeited and many are nearly perfect.

  • Most came from AU-detail, AU or XF slabs of NGC, ANACS, PCGS and ICG....however there are a couple of raw coins purchased from reputable dealers. The hardest one to crack was my 1910-s, which came from an AU-58 NGC slab. That is probably the most valuable coin in the set besides the 11-d and 1908-s.

It looks like it's a fun set and quite nice. So long as you buy genuine coins without problems you should do okay. Genuine is the key and buying certified coins that you are willing to crack out will take care of that.

Really nice set and one of my favorite designs ever. The very first gold coin I ever bought was a 1913 $5 Indian back in the late 80s. Great job! Really neat to see them all together.

I am reviving this thread as I believe the contributors to and other readers of this thread may be interested in my current article and I wish for more forum members to comment about the underlying idea, a relatively inexpensive set of a classic series of U.S. gold coins.

Indeed, some additional forum who are interested in IH Half Eagles may wish to read both this thread and my article, I hope. It is clear that my thinking on the matter is consistent with the theme here, though I was unaware of this thread when I authored my current article, which is a part of a series. I have examined hundreds of IH Half Eagles.

Perry Hall: <<Unless you are an expert authenticator, you should only buy a coin from this series in a major grading service slab. This series has been very heavily counterfeited and many are nearly perfect.>>

I tend to agree with Perry Hall. I agree with Johnny and most of the contributors of this thread in that a set of circulated Indian Half Eagles is a wonderful quest. It is important, though, to be careful.

Did all of the readers of this thread know that, except for three or so dates, a whole set may be assembled for less than $500 per coin!

A standard blank five cent piece (i.e., "nickel) page should work for half eagles.

    Nice set.

Don't give up on the 1929. I used to own one in an XF40 holder. Still kick myself to this day for selling it.

I am working on a PCGS CAC circulated set at this time. To put together a MS set is too expensive for me.
