LOL Kelly Johnson. You need these guys to win a WS. I should know I am a Giants fan. Matt Williams just cannot make the right move. Saw it last year in the playoffs and saw it this series. Probably won't be back next year.

How does the Utley play stand? First off, the neighborhood play is not reviewable. Secondly, Utley never touched 2nd which means he is out of the baseline in running to the dugout and should be out. Travesty!
<< <i>How does the Utley play stand? First off, the neighborhood play is not reviewable. Secondly, Utley never touched 2nd which means he is out of the baseline in running to the dugout and should be out. Travesty! >>
Darling provided a somewhat convoluted explanation from the league office, which is supposedly why the Mets did not appeal the play, but the Dodgers should not have been able to review that play in the first place. Bizarre play that was botched, imo.

As far as Utley never touching second and therefore never should have been awarded the base after review, he was never required to touch second. He was called out on the force, and therefore was obligated to leave the field. Now, whether he had any intent to touch the base, or whether he interfered, or whether it was or wasn't a legit neighborhood play... that can and will be debated forever. I'm guessing there's a stipulation in the rulebook somewhere that deals with this situation, although I haven't seen anyone drag it out.
Hard slide, dirty slide, clean play, whatever. At the end of it, a young man has a broken leg and this play will be for infielders what Posey's injury was for catchers. A rule, or rules, will be implemented to provide some protection for them.
For the record, I'm uncomfortable with the slide, with the point at which it began and with the fact that Utley made contact with Tejada before he made contact with the ground. I don't think he was out of the basepath as his hand and wrist went directly over the bag, but I think he started his slide at the bag and not before. I certainly feel bad for Tejada. It was a fast play and I think Utley was doing what he thought he needed to to break up the DP, but unfortunately it turned out bady.
<< <i>Secondly, Utley never touched 2nd which means he is out of the baseline in running to the dugout and should be out. Travesty! >>
Even if Tejada had somehow gotten up and tagged Utley when he was headed to the dugout, he'd STILL be safe at 2nd. Runners aren't penalized for heading to the dugout when the umpire makes an incorrect "out" call.
Utley better wear a football helmet if he comes up to bat in Game 3 vs Harvey.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
What bothers me most about the play (other than Tejada's unfortunate injury) is that what constitutes a neighborhood play is not precisely defined. If this wasn't one, MLB, then please describe precisely what that play is.
If I was on the Mets and my pitcher didn't retaliate for this I'd be pretty PO'd. But doubt it will be Harvey. If Utley comes up against a middle reliever he'd better figure on hitting the dirt.

<< <i>I thought Utley might have a concussion after that play. >>
i thought the same thing. As he ran off the field he was opening and closing his eyes in a way that made me think he was having trouble seeing straight.
If Utley gets an at bat in NY ... ESPECIALLY against a reliever ... he better go to the plate dressed like this:

Congrats to the Mets and their fans here. Fantastic pitching staff, clutch hitting and the defense made the plays it was supposed to. The Mets earned and deserved the series win. Good luck against the Cubs.
I'm quite disappointed, but also believed deep down that this Dodgers team just didn't have what it took to go deep. Once you get past Kershaw and Greinke the pitching cupboard was bare, which put a ton of pressure on those two to be stellar every start. If they didn't have their best, then the pressure was on the offense to produce runs. Tonight, and many, many other nights, too damn many runners were left on base and there were too damn many unproductive outs with RiSP. Yes, players have to execute and there a large part of the responsibility rests on them. However, I 100% believe that Mattingly and McGwire are inept. Mattingly is a poor game and roster manager, and McGwire is an absolute f'ing joke as a hitting coach. If I was Andrew Friedman, I'd refuse both of them admittance to the locker room and have security show them to the gate.

7 innings pitched; 2 hits; 1 earned run; 10 Ks and 1 walk
6 innings pitched; 4 hits; 0 earned runs; 11 Ks and 0 walks
and you would lose both games of a double header
you would never believe it!!!
