Best part is I was with a friend who used to raze me about asking for half dollars and spending them for small purchases, tips, etc..

He had to sit and watch me in the car opening solid roll after roll.

He's probably going to become a convert. You'll never hear the end of his escapades.

Go to PO to mail some stuff and bank is right next door.

Ask if they have any rolls of halves......They have 21 rolls......420 coins.

    19 rolls are solid 40% silver...........380 coins.

All are solid 40% rolls that appear to have been set back around 1968.

Interestingly they all had big X and word 'No' written on old bank wrappers.

I'd guess it was 1968 or so and they were pulling the 90% and not bothering with the 40% stuff.

    ..........................................................................................

I had once before gotten 2 solid rolls of WLH from a bank in mid piedmont NC and on a different occasion in same town I scored an original bank rolled solid BU 1964 kennedy roll.

I never thought I'd better those two finds..............

Dollar wise this is bigger and I really don't expect to ever beat this score..................
  • I will buy Xout rolls too. People don't search very well in my experince. I've not gotten any silver from them, but did get a real 1982 No FG once.

    Great score.

  • << <i>I believe it 100%. Back in the 90's (exactly when I can't remember) I needed space and got fed up with looking at all the 40% halves I had pulled out of circulation. I brought probably $250-$300 face worth of solid 40% rolls to the bank. Been regretting it ever since........ >>

    ............................................................

    One observation..

If you assume a 40% silver half is worth around $3 and if these were set back at face in say 1969 then sitting on those coins for 45 years generated around a 4% per year compounded return.

You could have likely achieved the same return depositing them into a CD.

    Wow! Nice score! Congratulations!

Btw, there are two 1971 clad Kennedy halves in that group, but who's counting. It is still a great hit.

You were correct about the 2 1971s.

I broke open the rolls and simply looked at edges for initial sorting.

Those 1971s will sometimes trick you on initial edge only inspection.
