I think the last 1980 vending boxes at BBCE were approx. $200 in June of 2013. Pulled this 9 from that vending rip. Hope for an upgrade this time around!

The heart does jump a little when pulling that card from a vending box.
Just curious...using this 1979 vending box as an example, is there any price people would consider too high to pay? At $440, we're averaging almost a buck a card for '79s that are notorious for their horrible centering. Or are we once again just viewing the box as an asset/investment in its own right, and ignoring the expected break value?

It's a rough rule of thumb, but I personally place a value on a vending box at about half that of a wax box, which in this case would yield 432 cards. Market value of a 1979 Topps baseball wax box is about $900 right now, maybe more, so $440 is not that unreasonable, imo, especially considering the box is from a sealed case.
By comparison a pack of 75 mini wax on the BBCE site will set you back $67.00 plus shipping, or about $7.00 a card, two of which will be wax and/or gum-stained.

<< <i>I feel like I bought a 1980 vending from BBCE about 6 months ago at $175. Now they are at $330!! Wow!! >>
I think there's definitely a premium for being case fresh. I think loose vending boxes are more difficult to authenticate than other unopened forms. >>
Definitely the case. The sealed case adds a nice premium, imo. >>
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember at one point Steve telling me that BBCE will not buy loose boxes of vending, only full cases (unless they are buying back a box with their pedigree).
I didn't feel like I would get $440 of enjoyment out of busting 1979 topps so I passed.
As for $330 for the 1980, that is pressing it but still feels like I will get my money's worth so to speak. But if the price of a PSA 9 Henderson doesn't increase in kind over time, then I don't see paying higher for unopened.
I don't buy this "there is inherent value in keeping packs unopened without any regard to the value of what may be inside" argument.

I remember for the longest time that a PSA 9 Henderson card was $200. I haven't checked lately but I'm betting it's more than that. For 79, Smith Rc used to be a $350 card, as recently as 2-3 years ago, but I believe it's almost at 1K now, isn't it?

For me personally, it's all relative to FMV and has absolutely nothing to do with EV. $440 seems like a stout figure for a 79 vending box, but a quick check on eBay reveals a "generic" box recently exchanging hands for this amount. And that's not taking into consideration the sealed case aspect of the boxes acquired last night. Once that's tossed in, $440 looks awfully appealing. To me, at least.

I can see the point that there must be some break up value in order for unopened to command a strong price. To me this is the argument against the 89 Score FB box where even scoring a number of big name PSA 10's will likely leave you short of the value of an unopened box. With the 79's I think the possibility of a Ozzie 9 justifies the price as long as the 9's hold theirs. As has been said many times before though the value premium on unopened is derived in leaving it unopened.
Tim, I think your idea of the value of vending vs wax is interesting. I think it is less than 50% though. Apparently BBCE values it closer to 35-40% looking at where they priced these vending compared to their wax. By the way, if you or anyone else have access to BBCE 1979 wax boxes at $900 I will buy them all day from you. Anyone can PM me of they have one for sale.
<< <i>I can see the point that there must be some break up value in order for unopened to command a strong price. >>
Thankfully, the disproportionate relationship between a box itself and the expected value of the contents doesn't apply to me. If it ever comes time to release unopened material into the market, my only task is to find one soul willing to tackle that obstacle in my stead. Who knows, perhaps there will come a time when logic reigns supreme and a correction ensues. But if it doesn't? Fine by me, because we're cruising with the top down on a one-way street.
Over 1k for a 79 wax box?? I'm glad I bought mine in 2004 instead of 2014, lol..

I agree with others that there has to be some breakup value to drive up the unopened prices. You don't see 1984T baseball ramping in value. Mainly because there isn't a money card in that set. As long as Henderson and Ozzie RCs go for big money in PSA 10, it will give a lot of headroom for these boxes to increase in value.

the only 79 wax I bought was $500 and it turned out to be a dud. There is a weird story in that. One, it was $500 which today would be worth more...but the fact that I was actually willing to rip it open...
Incidentally, getting 1980 at one point, at $500 was reasonable, now a wax is near $1,000....my 80's collection just got that much further to finish...

Scott, my twisted mind considers only cards that are wrapped in a pack, be it wax, cello, or rack, to be unopened. I also agree with you that vending boxes all look the same other than BASEBALL, FOOTBALL, HOCKEY, etc. stamped on the box which does not appeal to me. While the generic design of rack boxes starting in 1977 through the 1980's is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye, I enjoy them as I can look through the rack packs inside. Of course, this is all coming from a guy who collects packs and boxes meant to be opened, but doesn't open any of it, LOL.

Pulling a mint 9 Ozzie rookie from a vending box is about a 1 in 50 proposition, I'd guess. Very few other decent values in that box, even in mint 9. Rose and Molitor are decent, a mint Stargell is not gonna happen out of vending. I agree with those who've said the break up value of this box doesn't justify the price tag. I used to buy these for $75. They were all crap. I'd advise a buyer to keep it sealed and hope for the best.

<< <i>I don't consider vending unopened and Grote15 isn't much of an 80's guy so stock up while you can.
Unopened? Sure when coming from a sealed case. But I just can't get into collecting vending or rack boxes since they all looked alike throughout the 80's at least if I recall correctly. They may be a good investment, but they don't make such a great collectible in my opinion at least.

I am in full agreement with the very first part of your post, Mike..

I took it to mean he was only agreeing with my twisted mind
Very few other decent values in that box, even in mint 9. Rose and Molitor are decent, a mint Stargell is not gonna happen out of vending.
I agree with those who've said the break up value of this box doesn't justify the price tag. I used to buy these for $75. They were all crap.
I'd advise a buyer to keep it sealed and hope for the best.

It went up last night I believe so there were probably not three left this morning. Notice how I said three.

has been abducted by aliens or something

If I'm ever on at 2am again and I see any unopened football, do you want me to ring you? I'll even make sure I was drinking this time.
