Or are they experts at striking tungsten?

But PM forum members (42%) thrive on unfounded speculations. Conspiracy theories are much more entertaining than the boring truth.
Refernce the Ft. Knox thread
Gold in Ft Know?
<< <i>Me too, Cache! Now somebody explain the Tungsten remark. Last time I looked, it weighs more than gold. They'd have to be some experts to make a heavier metal like tungsten pass as gold. >>
Gold's density is 19.30 gm/cm³. Tungsten's density is 19.25 gm/cm³, only 0.26% different. 10 troy ounces of gold occupies a volume of 16.116 cm³. 16.116 cm³ of tungsten weighs 310.236 gms or 9.974 troy ounces. The difference is only 0.0259 troy ounces.
Platinum is denser than gold and might can be combined with the tungten to get the correct density.
A specific gravity test would have to be accurate enough to pick up a 0.26% difference.

i agree

He accidentally put his car keys into the lock. It started.
So he took it out around the block, but the police pulled him over. No taillights.

Tungsten is a little bit less dense than gold. I'd guess a fake bar would be coated in a thin layer of gold, but it should be the exact weight (which is easy to measure), so it would be a small bit larger, which is probably a lot harder to notice. I have never actually done a specific gravity test, but 0.26% sounds not easy. I wouldn't be surprised if one could make quite deceptive bars like this. Ultrasound would probably detect a reflection at the gold-tungsten layer and reveal it, that would be a defense. I'm sure the mint can tell them apart though
