Newp- 1795 Flowing Hair $1-GTG (Grade Listed)

Recently got this reholdered as well. Didn't know that a scratch proof one was right around the corner. So let me know what you think.

It's a PCGS VF25 CAC with its Coinfacts photo. Thanks for your comments.

I haven't seen enough of these to judge wear vs. strike, but looking at reverse denticle and lettering wear I'd give it a VF20. The obverse is better, looking VF25-VF30. Stars & lettering are way too flat to warrant an XF grade. I'll call it a VF25 two-leaf and a very attractive one at that.

Too much denticle wear for an XF I am afraid.

My first thoughts were higher, but I think the reverse holds back the coin a bit. I will go VF35, but it could easily go XF IMHO. But I own exactly one bust dollar in F15, so my experience with these coins is quite limited, but it doesn't mean I don't like to guess!

  • I would guess XF 40 and that is one fine looking coin. I've always wanted a flowing hair dollar.

I think I'd be okay with it at a 40...while admitting I know nothing of the intricacies of the early strikes.

My first thought was 35/40, but I'm no expert in these.

But most importantly, I appreciate a GTG that's not a Morgan Dollar!
  • I would guess +/- 40

    30 sharpness
maybe a little higher market grade due to eye appeal
  • BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,850 ✭✭✭✭✭
This coin is or is very close to EF. The reason is that a number of Flowing Hair dollar varieties, including the most common ones, were flatly struck on the hair. Has a result the deatail was not very strong from the beginning and quckly wore off. Look at Ms. Liberty's eye, nose and mouth. Those features are quite sharp, and indicate that the true grade is higher than you might think. PCGS graded this dollar EF-40.

Bill, the comparison with your coin is interesting. The decision of wear vs. poor strike is important for the OP's coin and I'm interested to see what our hosts thought. I agree that the face, eye, and profile of the OP's coin are nicely detailed, but I'm still stuck on the flat dentils, and the way the reverse lettering fades into the rims, especially around "UNITED". An uneven strike could be part of this too I suppose. Still, I think the stars on the OP's coin aren't as well defined as on your EF40 example - no detail remaining in the central part of the star. I also think the hair detail over the forehead and head is a little better on your coin. Maybe my guess of VF25 is overly harsh, but I'm sticking with it for now. I'll concede that overall eye appeal is nice and could carry it higher.

The coin pictured is a PCGS VF25 CAC with its Coinfacts photo. I'm considering it for PCGS' Reconsideration service. Maybe I'll get a plus or a bump out of it. It looks VF30 to me. Thanks for all the comments.

Getting it re-graded from VF-25 to 30 would be of no consequence. You won't get any more money for it.

And a + grade isn't possible until the XF45 level.
    When in doubt, don't.
