1981 Vending Box Rip - COMPLETED.

Well, my friend Tim (Grote15) has ripped 1+ vending boxes from 1981 and the cards look pretty nice. I have one from the same source (a fellow member) so I am thinking about starting the RIP tonight. Right now on Long Island it is 17 degrees, windchill of minus 5 and snowing like a SOB.

Box looks legit. Probably will rip at least part of it after I eat.

For all you 81 guys ... what are the best cards to look for? I know there are some real low POPS. THANKS.

That is a clean clean vending box. It would be a fun rip. I just looked through some of my 1981s against the pop report last weekend. There are a ton of pop 0, 1 and 2 PSA 10s. Unfortunately I don't recall the names. Valenzuela of course is the biggie. No 10s.

Glenn Adams, Joel Youngblood are two.

Good luck and hopefully you need a ton of Card Savers!
  • DboneesqDboneesq Posts: 18,219 ✭✭
Not too much to show from the first 60 cards. I included the Youngblood because it's a tough card. I know this one is not good.

Got a Seaver but it was off l/r. Also a Mookie Wilson Future Stars, but like quite a few of the first 60 it had a slightly dinged corner.

Well I am thru ~100 cards. Not too much else besides these two. Not much star power. This friggin Adams looked nice, but like a LOT of the first 100 there is a slight touch on the top right corner. DAMMIT.

That Adams does look nice. There has never been one graded higher than an 8. How is surface?

50 more ... many with dings on the top right corner ... no star power ... quite a few Future Stars, but no Fernando.
This was the only one to show:

I have to think mine looks as good as that one, no? If it were centered just a TINY BIT lower!

Another 100 cards into the box. Still nothing real good. The Phillies card is probably the one in the best condition. Got a RYAN and a FERNANDO, but centering sucks on both!

Doug, Did you open your box from side with cards facing back? I opened both boxes from cards face out and in both boxes didn't pull a Future Stars or team card till second half of the box.

    Nice!

Good to see the Phillies team card with Dallas Green on the front.

Keep a nice run of Phillies for me and between you and Tim I should be in great shape.

    Go get em Doug!

Tim ... I put the box on its side and the front of the card was facing downward. The Future Stars and Team Cards were in the first half. In the second half the cards were turned around (still facing down but upside down). In this half it seems the centering is much better and the corner dings I had on many in the first half are not present as often.

Well, another 100 down. I actually set aside 10 cards, the most so far from a 100 card group.

50 more and pulled out these three. RICKEY makes an o/c appearance. Too bad.

Isn't Jorgensen a toughie? If it were centered only a bit more toward the top.

Any Lance Parrish that might hit a PSA 9 or 10?

edit: caught the stuff about the corners so, any Lance Parrish that might hit a PSA 8 or 8.5 image

Nice Valenzuela - it may be a little off top to bottom but it doesn't detract much from the card. Beautiful Rose!

Rose and Molitor look sharp, Doug! Palmer, too.

These boxes are really nice...I am going to break down the rest of my second box and my 3rd box as soon as I get these darn card savers in, LOL..

Rose is huge in 10...I think you definitely have at least a solid 9 there.

The box is now done. Here are the last three possibilities:

    image

    image

Like Tim said, one half of the box had all the Team Cards and Future Star cards. However, in the other half of the box the cards were in overall better shape.

The last 60 or so cards had much more than the typical "Vending Curl" to them. Most of them could probably be defined as being "warped".

This was the first Topps Vending Box I ever ripped. Overall it was a fun time. Glad I did it.

Some really nice cards, Doug! Look forward to seeing them! The Rose has a shot at PSA 10, as do the Molitor and Palmer, imo.

The side of the box opposite the team crads and future star cards is definitely the stronger side.

Man, you made quick work of that. I am a slow poke next to you, LOL!

Doug, that Rose is over 1K in PSA 10, and I think you have an excellent shot at that.

One recently sold for over 2K, actually..

Guys, you are making me SH*t my pants here! LOL I just saw that the last "10" went for over TWO THOUSAND in a Probstein auction last month.

Mine does have a few touches on the bottom edge. However, if you look at the one Rick sold ... just below the "O" in Rose at the bottom of the card, that chipping is a LOT worse than mine.

Here is the one that sold for $2,000.00+

There were SIX different bidders who were at $1,350.00 or better on the above card.

I'm not seeing the touched corner. But I'm working with nearly 44 year old eyes. But it looks like any number of other 10's from various years on the back cornerwise. Like anything else PSA(or SGC/BVG/BGS) it's gonna come down to grader. From those scans there's nothing I can see that makes it worse than the 10 that sold in auction. I still think it's a superior card.

    edit:
After a harder look at the card, I believe it's the bottom right corner, where it has that almost "dust corner" look to it.
But, I've got PSA 10's with that also...
