Anyone Ever Roll Search for Silver?

Back in 2005 I used to purchase boxes of Half Dollars from my bank, rummage through the rolls and pick out the silver coins. roll up the remaining coins and return the box back to the bank. My best box contained 112 silver coins. A good mixture of Franklins, Kennedys, and even a few Walking Libertys. Back then the worst box I ever had contained 11 silver half dollars. Later that year I moved out of state tried the same thing in my new state of Idaho, and completely struck out. Who else besides me used to roll search?

If you start doing this, don't forget to ask the tellers if they have any silver dollars or 50 cent pieces. My best find so far was from a teller who handed me 3 1969 Kennedys.

Also, I have found it much better to establish a good relationship with one specific teller. They will then help you out. I couldn't ask for anyone better than who I go through now.

I used to a couple years ago. I could order boxes from a Wells Fargo bank. Best I ever did was something like $6 in 90%. However, they started charging to order boxes, so I stopped. Haven't done much lately.

  • I would think by now all these currency companies would be grabbing the silver and even error bills. When I worked for a bank, I would exchange normal stuff for the good stuff.

Within this forum, who has not roll searched for silver is the question.

edit to add: My best luck was to go to small town banks and ask for rolls brought in by others. Found an FE cent, lots of dime, quarters, and halfs in silver. Hit them every time your traveling through, be nice bring a flower to the ones that work with you.

  • Many moons ago, I used to buy rolls of Indian head pennies for 20.00 per roll. A few years ago I was doing trade shows and selling DVD's and Disney stuff and offered an Indian head penny for every 10 dollars spent. You would not believe the kids that did not think they were real us coins. Now I still have many rolls and when I roll my standard coin change, I will slip an Indian in each roll and living in a small town it does not take long to hear the story of the "find of the year"........

Where else can you get that entertained for a 40 cent giveaway??????

Almost time to do it with barber nickel's.

Well Fargo searches their own coins for silver. Going to be hard to get much out of them.

    Have a nice day

I might be the only one who hasn't. My very limited roll searches have been for Wisconsin hi/lo leaf Quarters and no motto Washington Dollars. Failed on both and still have some of the dollars left. image

I quit when all I was getting from the bank were the rolls I had marked and sold to them.

wouldn't mind owning a Coinstar or two.

Dang, nice! Never had much luck here. One time, randomly got one 40% half in an otherwise clad roll. Will keep occasionally looking and hoping! image

Silver Half Dollar production extended from 1794 until 1964, through at least 2 depressions, a devastating Civil War and 2 World Wars. It could not survive though, Johnsons Great Society. image

I searched maybe a hundred half dollar rolls back in the late 1970's, ended up with maybe a roll of 40% and a few 90%, which I sold with the rest of my junk silver in 1979/1980 when silver was about $20.50 an ounce... hey, just like it is today! image

Just think - if ya had sold at $40 you wouldn't have lost money.

I bought those halves for 50 cents each (plus my time/labor) and sold them in 1979 for like $7 each. Yeah, If I had waited 32 years and sold them in 2011 , I could have gotten maybe $15 each.

I stopped when Vegas and Atlantic City eliminated the coins for their slots. Used to average about 5% in 40% or 90% Silver halves per $100. Boy, those were the good ole days, but long gone.

good advice, but don't teach them everything.

i was dating a manager who was getting them for me.
since we broke up, she can no longer order me single rolls, just $5000 boxes. (which she now searches herself image )

on the rare day i do go into a bank, i always ask.
