    Uggh, packaging options. Again…

Well, this comes from all the First Strike madness IMO. Those are "aftermarket" packaging options, so why shouldn't our buddies get in on the action?

Hardly any from last year's set were submitted for First Strike, and apparently very few unopened boxes were saved for possible future First Strikes. The 2012-W Silver Eagle from the set is especially scarce in First Strike with only 5 in PR70, 45 in PR69 and a few in lower grades. A PR70 First Strike recently sold for over $5K on eBay, and two PR69's realized around $500 each.

I suspect that the 2013 sets will generate many more First Strike submissions than the 2012 set did.

Is there any distinguishing finish that sets the coins apart from regular production?

Years ago I bought the first "Legacy" Proof set. All it had in it was the same coins in different packaging. After a while I decided that did nothing for me, and I sold it for a small profit. Although I prefer original mint packaging for modern coins, I don't collect
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • There isn't any difference in the finish on any of the coins. Just the included coins is what separates it as it's the only "sealed" proof set with all silver coins of different denominations. I believe they're the only proof sets to contain an actual "silver dollar" other than the bicentennial sets. I could be mistaken. Coffee not working too quick today. I know I'll be getting one for display with my other proof sets and at least (?) for investment. Hopefully they'll jump up quick like the 2012 Silver Proof sets. image

Shipping: Shipping is expected to begin in the first quarter of CY2014. Please check our website for the latest shipping information.

What's with the mint taking orders for items to be delivered months in the future? (same with the Teddy set: Shipping: Shipping is expected to begin in early March 2014.)

    image

people will order them up, till sell out (50,000 max). Wait a month then cancel them, how many will actually ship?

When will they learn? Don't they remember the last ASE set fiasco?

    (l8-)>>

  • No Kidding. The ASE was an absolute joke. I was told 3 (maybe 4) different days it was scheduled to ship and I would be billed. Then I get billed and my sets ship on a completely different day than I was told. image
btw edgar, I like your Mongolian Ural Owl avatar. That WP series is on my list. image Very unique coins.

The mintage limit for 2012 sets was 50,000. All 50,000 were sold. The 2012 sets are now bringing $280 to $300 each on eBay.

The mintage limit for 2013 sets is 50,000. About 37,000 sets have been ordered so far. Price from the Mint is $139.95.

    Thoughts?

Ouch! No way! You don't even get the cent or nickel?! I guess you have to buy another $50 set to get your 6 cents? Not for me.

The 2012 brings good money only because the mint pulled the silver sets early and kept the mintage low for the Kennedy and Rosevelt...I bought 2 last year and ordered 2 again this year...but only because I'm an idiot image

  • I bought a set from NWT Mint for a little less than current Ebay prices. I think I'm going to send it back for a refund (this place is sold out) and buy another set. The case of the set I bought is bowed a little and the half (the reason this is so much $ to begin with) and the dime are tilted to the point that the reeded edges have hit the inside of the case and actually damaged the case. There are plastic particles on the coins. Also, I noticed that due to the case bowing like it has, the two halves of the case had actually started to separate and I had to push them back together and there is also a chip on the inside of the case edge. Anyone else get a bowed case? EDITED TO ADD THAT THIS IS A 2012 SET, not 2013.

Sorry, but how is this coin any different than a regular 2012-W proof silver eagle? What does it matter what packaging it comes in and why note it on the slab? A fool and his money...

If it's not collectible it's flippable. But , as a previous poster has so eloquently pointed out, it hardly makes sense in the scope of numismatics. To each their own. I support and stand behind the collectors either way and will not knock or criticize your choices. EVER image I love collectors and collecting. The bidness is another story.

Needed for certain registry sets. Only 9 exist in PR70 First Strike at the moment.

Even PR69 First Strikes are bringing upwards of $600.

Just beyond belief! To think that I believed that that extra $ which the ANA designation on the RP Buff slabs was bringing was crazy - that's nothing compared to this. Boggles the mind.

This is label collecting....not coin collecting.
  • bretts911bretts911 Posts: 764 ✭✭✭
instead of buying one I bought 10 just now if I am not mistaken you have to buy 10 in order to even send in for first strike am i correct on this?
also im guessing as long as you leave the coins sealed for them to be first strike eligible???
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
While I am with the people who are aghast at the "label collecting", it does no good to whine about it.
It isn't a new thing in the last few years and, if one plays the game, one may as well make the money.

For me, I got out of the label playing flipping games and I am fine with a different focus...but I know it exists and that people do it.

Label Collecting is a hobby enjoyed by a few. Ive heard of people collecting labels off of fruit crates. Lables off of canned tomatoes
People collect Cigar Bands. Why not Coin Slab labels too?

I once heard of someone collecting bags and wrappers for McDonalds. It was a famous Numismatist.

Offer anything for sale, someone will buy it.

Lol. McDonald's wrappers? There is a fine line between collector and hoarder. This falls in with the latter.

The 2012 Limited Edition set went under nearly everyone's radar in submitting coins for First Strike. Hence the outsized prices.

I suspect that many more of each subsequent year's set will be submitted for First Strike, causing the 2012 issues to remain the First Strike keys to the series.

Don't be so sure, I ordered and received 2 orders of 1 set each, First Strike Eligible. Happy to see the pops, then I saw someones post, wanting to buy sealed FS boxes, to "make enough for a submission"? then I checked and was shocked to find that our host placed a restiction on these, "(Limited Edition PR Set" designation only available through the Bulk Department)". I still can't believe that they would throw this bone to bulk submissions only. Can't think of any reason for this limitation. But That's part of the reason for low FS pops. really soured me on submissions and registry sets. Those boxes remain sealed. maybe I'll find 8 more sealed sets.....maybe not

Ya I knew this but what I don't understand is the cutoff time of jan 29th of 2013?
My question is when is the cutoff date for the coins this year ?
    Thanks brett
  • OverdateOverdate Posts: 7,162 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't see a First Strike cutoff date for the 2013 sets posted yet, will depend upon initial ship date which should be soon.

Even disregarding the bulk submission restriction, not many First Strike eligible 2012 sets were saved in the original shipping boxes. Very few such boxes showed up on eBay; the number for the 2012 Coin and Currency Set and other special sets was much higher. It's likely that many collectors and speculators were unaware that a special label would be available - as far as I know, PCGS is the only grading service that offers this set-specific label.

That happened a couple of weeks ago to me...I called and they said they were aware of a glitch that was causing it and it would correct itself in a couple of days...it did

Strange this was when I logged into my Mint account the box that previews my last order said: "2013 LE Proof set...sold out"...of course it wasn't

    My thought is.......................

That's a helluva hype statement that has absolutely nothing to do with "Proof Sets".

Now if it were stated that is the 2nd lowest production of US Mint Packaging for a product with coins that are available elsewhere.............

Nah, not even that would work for me.

Provided you're still referring to the 2013 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.

The 2013 Silver Proof Set is finished at 420k, the second lowest mintage after the 2012 set at 395k.

Add 50k each for the 2012 and 2013 Limited Edition sets to arrive at the mintages for each year's silver dimes, quarters and halves.

The 2012 Limited Edition sets are bringing $250 to $300 each on eBay. The 2013 sets are still available from the Mint at $140 each, but preparing to go dark. At that price they appear to be a decent value.
